Label/Format: CBS – very early format with rough textured surfaces and the 33 speed indicator. The textured surfaces are from rim to rim, so total. Most have the 33 1/3 speed indicator, only the earliest examples have just 33. (Please see my label scan).

Label Conditions: Both look gorgeous: very clean with intense orange freshness. Just one or two ultra faint spindle marks (more like traces being so small), this copy looks little played. The legend started here, and few better way to enjoy this classic artists’ debut album.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 141 grams. A very good weight for a CBS record.

Rarity: The very early pressings of this landmark folk album are rare, and in such beautiful conditions even rarer. We all know, and I have stated on countless number of my listings, what these old mono albums were likely to have been subjected too. Thick, often blunt or worn-out needles that tracked at massive weights (incredibly, often over 10 grams that the inner sleeve still considered ‘light’), rarely aligned and set-up with anyout any due care. Resulting in damaged, shredded groove walls and now with appalling, noisy, unfocused sound. How many records this incredible age will still sound fantastic on a highly revealing stereo sound system? One arm drop from such an old record player and there’s another deep scratch or crator that wrote off so many of these classic vintage albums. We have all seen and heard such copies and being totally acoustic, this album has nowhere to hide unless of the highest quality. This landmark album has survived all the perils of the early 60s, it looks and sounds superb and is more than at home inside its lovely clean, little-worn cover. Do not underestimate just how hard such early records are to find like this, in mono especially. This is a quality copy worthy of a place in any record collection and is very rare indeed when offered so fine.

Brief Info: A legendary release from way back in 1962, it’s almost scary to ponder just how old this album actually is. Without any doubt, this is one of landmark albums of all-time and not just within the folk genre. Including just two self-written songs and the rest quality folk standards all given the Zimmerman treatment. The surprise I guess is the lack of chart success in his native US where it failed to even enter. Whereas in the UK, it made a very respectable No. 13. Purely acoustic folk, less than worthy copies can hide no audio blemishes, and glad to state this very early mono record hardly needs to. This looks hardly even played and clearly, it has been very carefully looked after and treated with the due respect it merits. NO damaging old stylus have inflicted any wear to these near pristine grooves that sound marvellous. The hidden hazard of groovewear resulting in distortion simply has NOT happened on this one and delighted to state the fact. The sound of this legendary recording still sounds practically as clean and sharp as when issued all those years ago – and without doubt, this is an early one. A copy for the discerning collector and few will be disappointed with this I feel certain.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): this being somewhat critical, just a little mild rear entrance edge area toning but little else. A single format with front laminate that wraps around the three closed edges to three external rear flipbacks. Printed and made in England but with NO printer’s credits or imprint text of any kind.

Lamination & Front: Very fresh, shiny and super-clear with any traces of friction rubs or dulling few and light, an dulled arc near the top edge and a lighter still one at the opposite bottom seen more under light. Few, if any will avoid this over the considerable number of years with thicker records inside. This retains full adhesion with no lifting or blisters, always the best news for maximum visual pleasure – the young Dylan portrait will rarely be seen better. Creasing, always a major factor on these old laminated covers, this front has barely any at all which is little short of remarkable. Even those ultra fine edge types have been avoided on this robust cover that has been made with thicker than average card. A few fine surface marks or odd mild impression seen under light and some modest toning near very edge of the right entrance area is also difficult to avoid, purely natural light exposure can do this, here registering little. One tiny corner chip (bottom right) and overall, a front that looks really lovely and it will take an exceptional one to better it (and I best most that will, will be far more recent examples, of that, I am certain).

Cover Back: The main back panel has only only aged very slightly due to some very mild and light toning spots mostly near the entrance left edge. Any other discolouration is very light indeed but being honest, I consider a little gentle ageing actually enhances a cover of this vintage – indeed some collectors would indeed consider this to look perfect for it’s era. In terms of damage or rear wear, well, barely really and I consider this back to still be clean and quite fresh looking. The lack of rubbing, marks and ringwear is great news. The flipbacks are also very clean without the usual grime-line formation on the laminate ends and all are devoid of any burring or lifts bar one tiny (and I do mean tiny) burr trace on the bottom one (look extra hard). Even more incredibly, there are barely any hairline creases to the laminate on these flipbacks which all as solid and perfectly shaped as new. An impressive back to complement the equally marvellous front, if the faint toning mentioned is an issue, do not bid, but surely only the perfectionists would worry?

Top Edge: One tiny surface chip (again look hard), that apart, unworn.

Bottom Edge: Superb up to the very corner tips, this and the one above are ultra smooth and scuff-free to the finger tip bar the one tiny chip on the top.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Thicker card but still sharp with barely any traces of wear and guaranteed untrimmed. Barely thickened at all with no burring or feathering, just traces of slight age toning. Any traces of thumb creasing traces are tiny, few and faint. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: A super spine too: solid, straight, uncompressed and square. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and uncracked laminate that has no peeling and is super clear, any surface marks tiny and faint. Again, very smooth to the fingertip with barely even a trace of a scuff or hairline creases – simply incredible.

Corners: A small chip to the bottom right front, any others are tiny indeed and all retain excellent shape.

Cover Summary: A beautiful all-round example of this famous early 60’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. With only modest light clues to it’s great age, this still very attractive item should please most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: this came in a polylined plain inner white which is British patents with ‘Foreign Patents Pending’ text, these pre-dated even the orange CBS promotional inners that followed in the mid-60s. This has minimal discolouration and only marked down a little for corner creases and crinkle. Both window circles are ultra crisp and neat and the lining clear with only very slight crinkle. All edges unsplit with no repairs and all considered, this is quite impressive in it’s own modest way too.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++) and such a copy has to be taken in perspective: this is a very old record and in mono and it looks simply fantastic. A very impressive visual copy that is clean, shiny, intense black and quite heavily pressed. A copy very little used or even handled on all the evidence with any surface marks few, light and very faint indeed. Visually a super record that should please most collectors again – an extraordinary piece of folk history by the world’s greatest exponent of the genre.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This wonderful record plays up to it’s high visual grading and most-all beyond with very little to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, never take this for granted on this or any mono record, especially one so delicate and old. All frequencies are sharp, clear and fully focused - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound, the legend of Dylan could almost be in the room performing for you. Any surface sounds are minimal and very faint and no significant pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Few of the really early examples will match or outperform this vintage pressing I feel sure, the odd faint crackle trace or odd sporadic gentle click is nigh-on impossible to avoid, simply compare to most seen. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been clearly well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. This is no ‘mono’ single channel noises or crackles and nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This copy will prove immensely difficult to find better and even matching it will prove a challenge, this merits strong recommendation.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
