BackgroundBOBOB DYLAN – THE SELF TITLED 1962 ALBUM (“BOB DYLAN”) – ULTRA-RARE ORIGINAL 1961 COLUMBIA MONO LP CL-1779
Background and Provenance:Bob Dylan staring out from the cover of his self-titled 1962 debut album would soon become the musical spokesman of a generation. Instant Dylan landmarks like “Man of Constant Sorrow” and “Highway 51” — and gut-wrenching versions of folk/blues classics like “Baby, Let Me Follow You Down” and “See That My Grave Is Kept Clean” — made the abundant talents of this legend-to-be obvious.
Forty years later, the album — now available in its ultra-rare, original mono mix - promotional copy— stands as a revered monument to the timeless genius of Bob Dylan. This 1961 promotional copy (CL 1779 US) is a variant of the first demonstration release and has printed white stickers on the Six Eye Columbia label and on the back cover ("For Demonstration Use Only Nor For Sale"). Apparently, Albert Hammond Sr. signed a production order in 1961 for 3000 mono and 500 stereo copies of this album. This ultra rare promo was obtained directly from Bob Dylan himself before it was commercially released by an entertainment accountant and business manager who had represented Peter Paul and Mary. The accountant was introduced to Bob Dylan as a new Columbia artist and potential client. Subsequently, Dylan gave him this record! This album has never been on the market before and has been in storage for over 40 years.
Note that these promotional copies were often distributed to radio station DJs months ahead of the scheduled release and are said to be the very first pressing of a particular title.
Condition:
The vinyl is in near mint condition with very light superficial abrasions (mostly sleeve scuffs) which does not effect the visual integrity of the vinyl. This record looks like it was hardly ever played, if at all. Vinyl still shines and sparkles like new. Comes with the original stock Columbia Six Eye label inner sleeve, which is in mint condition.
The Promo version of this record is much rare than the regular commercially released version of this album (it has been estimated that the promo version is 30 times rarer than the regular version).
The cover is nice..about a very good +.
The following imperfections are noted on the cover:
The cover has a partial split bottom seam (very small - approximately one half inch long).
Cover shows some slight yellowing on sides and corners, apparently from age. Nothing significant and the back cover is still white.
Minor shelf ware noted on the seams (not significant).
Corners have slight ware (not significant)
Spine has some wrinkles, nicks and slight ware (probably due to storage for 40 years - not significant, but the name Bob Dylan printed at the top of the spine has some ware and the print is light in this spot).
Cover has some light pressure lines in places (not significant, but if you hold the album under the light, you can see them in spots).
Note that there are No holes, cut out corners, saw marks, writing, stamps, peel off marks, mold, mildew, water damage, warping, glue, cuts or other imperfections.l pressing of the record.
