What a great record! Critically observed as the rock counterpart of Sonny Rollins' Way Out West (not just because of the art, but its loose adherence to a Western--in the John Wayne and Louis L'Amour sense--motif), Bo Diddley is a Gunslinger is absolutely exciting. Clearly recorded with some haste, there's an immediacy and coherence about these performances lacking from most pop/rock records of the era. As with earlier releases, Bo Diddley is quite interested in various aspects of African American folklore, especially on "Whoa Mule (Shine)," as the name of the mule is a reference to Shine, the folkloric black trickster who escaped the Titanic shipwreck (see a clip of Rudy Ray Moore's version of the myth here). Also, the album moves at a brisk pace, clocking in a just 25 minutes. With the exception of "Somewhere" and "No More Lovin'," there is not a dull moment here. Highlights include "Gunslinger," "Ride on Josephine," "Cadillac," and "Sixteen Tons."

Not only does it sport one of the most striking album covers of its era (Diddley decked out in cowboy finery, about to get the drop on some unfortunate varmint with one of his fieriest guitars lying at his feet), this 1961 album contains some fine music. The title track continues the legend of you-know-who, while "Ride on Josephine" and "Cadillac" rock like hell (and Ed Sullivan must have been glad to see that Diddley finally learned "Sixteen Tons").

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS STRONG VG++. A few light abrasions  ARE VISIBLE, but they appear fairly  insignificant relative to the overall condition of the vinyl, and are only moderately visually distracting. For most part, the vinyl looks impeccable, without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)           The record has a "deep groove" (an indent in the label about 1/2-inch from the edge of the label, which on SOME labels is associated with very early or first pressings).

(d)          Mono pressing of this title is much rarer, and by far more  preferable to its FAKE ("electronically rechannelled") stereo counterpart. We estimate that FAKE stereo copies of this album outnumber monos by a ratio of at least 10:1.

(e)           True Stereo copies of this album are NOT known to exist.

(f)            Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·                               THE COVER

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        Cover has a partially split top seam (between 2 and 4 inches  / 5 to 10 centimeters); This split seam was delicately taped by the previous owner with a piece of transparent scotch tape

-        Cover has a partially split bottom seam (between 1 and 2 inches  / 2.5 to 5 centimeters)

-        Cover has some fraying/wear along the lower seam

-        Minor shelf wear noted on the top seam and spine (nothing significant)

-        Cover has a visible "wrinkle"(crease)  in one of the corners.  (VISIBLE ON FRONT SIDE ONLY)

-        Cover has three corners slightly worn / dinged (nothing significant)

-        Cover has JUST A HINT of ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 1.

-        Cover shows JUST A HINT of yellowing on back side, apparently from aging.
