Listening to this record, it's easy to see where Mick Jagger and his contemporaries got their egos. While Elvis was making women swoon and Chuck Berry was singing odes to his ding-a-ling, Bo Diddley was arguably pioneering one of rock's most essential elements: self-mythology. Who else would have the audacity to claim that they invented a 2-measure, 6-note rhythmic pattern? Here he sings a song called "Story of Bo Diddley", which would be neither the first nor the last time he would write a song about himself. An imaginary tennis match between Bo Diddley and Chuck Berry probably went something like this:

Bo: "You know I invented tennis."

Chuck (visibly annoyed): "You INVENTED tennis?"

Bo: "Well, not invented, but I came up with the idea for the net and I told them to make the ball green."

Chuck: "Who!? Who did you tell this to??"

Bo: "Bo Diddley's serve! Man, I'm kicking your butt. 'Berry on Top'? I think not."

Chuck: "Bo, it's tied man, what's your problem?"

Bo (excitedly hitting the ball over the fence): "GO BO DIDDLEY!"

This album is also quite a bit louder and swampier than Chuck Berry recordings from the same time. Special mention goes to the West Indies-influenced "Limber" and the original storming version of the perennial "Roadrunner", but this entire album is eminently listenable and is one of the most enjoyable 50s/early 60s rock albums I've come by. I wonder if Nilsson found inspiration for "The Flying Saucer Song" from Bo Diddley drunkenly arguing with an old homeless version of himself on "Signifying Blues".

(c)           The record is apparently pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(d)          True Stereo copies of this album are NOT known to exist (this is an electronic stereo recording)

(e)           Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!
