Betty Bennett learned to sing with name bands like Woody Herman, Claude Thornhill, Charlie Barnet, Charlie Ventura, always with a yen and a talent for singing good songs with a musicianly feeling. At the time of this recording, she had been dividing her time between singing in West Coast night clubs and keeping house for her famous husband, André Previn, who has reciprocated by writing her arrangements.
Maria Ellington, like Betty Bennett, is married to a famous musical husband, the great Nat "King" Cole. Cole, for whom she subjugated a budding career and whose tender, musicianly taste is evident in the treatment of the tunes she sings. She was starred to the band of Duke Ellington, to whom she is not related, before her new career as Mrs. Cole, occasionally spiced with appearances as Maria Ellington.
This album contains sentimental mood music for a 'Blue Sunday' afternoon, or for any other lonely time of the week when you need some sympathetic musical understanding, or for any other time when you feel like hearing two really good female singers sing twelve really good songs written by some of the best songwriters of the American Songbook.
