Paul Whaley (born January 14, 1946) is an American drummer best known as the drummer for rock band Blue Cheer. He grew up in the town of Davis, California, where he played drums with a local band called the Oxford Circle. Whaley is credited on the Oxford Circle album Live at the Avalon 1966.[1] When he left the Oxford Circle to join Blue Cheer in 1967, the former band dissolved.[2] He was the longest-standing member in Blue Cheer other than founder Dickie Peterson in the band when it broke up[3] in late 2009, following Peterson's death at age 63

1971's OH! PLEASANT HOPE was the sixth and final album of BLUE CHEER "Mark I." The album is 360° turnaround from the days of VINCEBUS ERUPTUM. Many of the tunes have an acoustic base and wouldn't sound out of place on QUICKSILVER's SHADY GROVE or some laid-back Southern rock album. There's a ton of guest musicians as well, leading one to believe that the album was not quite a group effort and the individual songwriters were responsible for the recording of their own songs. Last-man-standing Dickie Peterson has only two discernible lead vocals, on the album's bookends, the I'm-a-ramblin'-man "Hiway Song" and his "Heart Full Of Soul" (not the YARDBIRDS opus) , the album's most rockin' cut. Gary Yoder's   THE OXFORD CIRCLE and KAK compadres Jim Keylor and Denher Patten are on hand and probably play on the cuts he wrote. BC and KAK lyricist Gary R. Grelecki is also on board as well as Dr. Richard Peddicord, the band's sound-designer, with two of his own songs including the title cut, a hippies prayer while looking to "re-stock." Multi-instrumentalist Norman Mayell's two cuts are the most progressive featuring sitar and sax, and can be seen as a precursor to his next project, SOPWITH CAMEL's genre-bending THE MIRACULOUS HUMP RETURNS FROM THE MOON. Produced by original drummer Eric Albronda, OH! PLEASANT HOPE holds together quite well considering it seems more like a family-reunion send off than a band effort. The album's excellent denim and quilt cover art is a perfect fit with the more laid-back contents within.
