In 1994, the members relocated to New Orleans, Louisiana[8] to begin work on their second album, Soup, with producer Andy Wallace. The album was released in 1995, and predominantly featured shorter songs with a less conventional alternative rock approach, including New Orleans-style jazz and a hodgepodge of instrumentation throughout, such as horn sections and mandolin/banjo tracks. The lyrics to "St. Andrew's Fall" referenced a suicide jump, "Skinned" spoke about the life of a serial killer, and "New Life" addressed the forthcoming birth of Hoon's child. "Mouthful of Cavities" featured backing vocals from Jena Kraus, who subsequently recorded a solo record with Thorn and Smith. Despite the debut of the lead single, "Galaxie", at number 25 on the Billboard charts,[9] Soup ultimately failed to meet sales expectations.[8]
Later that year, Blind Melon contributed a version of the song "Out on the Tiles" to the Encomium tribute album to Led Zeppelin, and cover of the Schoolhouse Rock! song "Three Is a Magic Number" to the Schoolhouse Rock! Rocks compilation. Their version of "Three Is a Magic Number", although never a charting single, became a fan favorite and featured in the films Never Been Kissed, Slackers, and You, Me and Dupree.[10] All Music Guide reviewer Theresa E. LaVeck has praised the tune's "'70s feel-good vibe" and "rolling jam-band rhythms".[11]
Against the advice of Hoon's drug counselor,[8] Blind Melon went on tour in support of Soup. The band initially employed a counselor to assist Hoon's rehabilitation, but this attendant was soon dismissed.[8] After several weeks on the road, Hoon was found dead on the band's tour bus of a heart attack caused by a cocaine overdose, on October 21, 1995 in downtown New Orleans.
Cover - Excellent - Really the cover is in NM condition with just the price tag that someone put on this cover and very slight corner tweak. Other than that, the cover is NM
Inner Sleeve - NM - Standard plastic sheeting inner sleeve. There is also a Menu insert with liner notes and thank you's.
Album - Near Mint - Clean, no marks.
Grading Scale
Mint - Sealed and unplayed.
Near Mint -Virtually New, this grading is given only to opened albums that still appear brand new but have been played.
Excellent - Slightly flawed albums that might have a couple of scuffs that do not effect play. There will be no pops or skips. Covers might have 1 to 2 minor flaws.
Very Good Plus - For an album, this grading will mean that there are potentially some pops or background noise, not skips, when playing. There will be some visual wear to the vinyl. For a cover, this grading will reflect 3-4 visual flaws, but there will be no seam splitting or discount holes/clips. There may be minor ring wear, or slight corner rounding
Very Good - For an album there might be a couple of skips, but they are not fatal skips, they do play through. These albums will also show some surface wear and potentially label wear or writing on the labels. They are still players though! You should be able to enjoy most of the album with just a skip or two and not have to get up and move the needle. For the cover, they will show 5-6 visual flaws.
Good -This grading should not even be on any item that I am selling unless it is in relation to a busted up cover with a great NM or EXC graded vinyl in it. This cover will likely have major seam splitting along with multiple other flaws. The vinyl will be challenging to listed to with multiple scuffs and fatal skips. Just buy a better copy.
Poor - Album is junk and the Cover is trash. Why would you buy something like this? Just remember this grading scale when you buy albums on Ebay. A lot of sellers fluff their grading scale and don't tell you about all of the flaws when they sell them. Don't be afraid to send back your vinyl if it has not been graded correctly.
