BLIND BOY FULLER I'M A RATTLESNAKIN' DADDY RAG MAMA
Blind Boy Fuller, 1930's Black American Blues Guitarist Columbia Microphone Label, 78rpm record BLIND BOY FULLER I'M A RATTLESNAKIN' DADDY 17862 Columbia Catalog number, 37776 - recording date: 07/23/35 Flip side: RAG, MAMA, RAG Blind Boy Fuller (born Fulton Allen) was an American blues guitarist and vocalist. He was one of the most popular of the recorded Piedmont Blues artists with rural Black Americans, a group that also included Blind Blake, Josh White and Buddy Moss. Wow! You won't believe that this song was recorded in 1935! This is the real precursor to rock n' roll as we know it! Those who call themselves music historians say that Elvis recorded the first rock n' roll song in 1954. When they asked Elvis about him starting the rock and roll genre, he clearly stated that "it wasn't him that started the business (rock n' roll) Listen to Blind Boy Fuller and you can hear what Elvis meant. Rev up the speed and you've got rock n' roll. Fuller (July 10, 1907 - February 13, 1941), made over 120 sides, and his recordings appeared on several labels. His style of singing was rough and direct, and his lyrics explicit and uninhibited as he drew from every aspect of his experience as an underprivileged, blind Black person on the streets - pawnshops, jailhouses, sickness, death - with an honesty that lacked sentimentality. Although he was not sophisticated, his artistry as a folk singer lay in the honesty and integrity of his self-expression. His songs contained desire, love, jealousy, disappointment, menace and humor. He was an expressive vocalist and a masterful guitar player, best remembered for his up-tempo ragtime hits including "Step It Up and Go." At the same time he was capable of deeper material, and his version of "Rattlesnakin' Daddy" is as deep as most Delta blues. This classic old 78 has been in my possession since I bought it in the 1940's. I have always felt Fuller introduced the music everyone loves so much today. If you are serious about music, you must have this historic and classic oldie!
