Something of a cult classic, there's been a lot about this band, and in particular this album, recently. More than likely it's due to the advent of New Wave Trad Metal bands following this occult/doom rock style, like The Devil's Blood or Blood Ceremony. In any case, upon turning back the clock and exploring the occult undercurrent present in some rock bands around this time, Black Widow were probably the best practitioners of this style, sporting a Jethro Tull/King Crimson heaviness, that is without the use of ridiculous guitar solos & riffs, but rather zany vocals, taboo themes and great use of other instruments, most notably the flute. Beginning with the drawn-out "In Ancient Days", the album starts out brilliant, with great use of sax & hammond organ, coupled with the angelic vocals to craft a very Crimsonian anthem, conjuring atmosphere like no other. "Way To Power" is more aggressive, and "Come To The Sabbat" is really quite insane, as the vocals get louder and faster and the insturments build up quite an effective crescendo. All in all, the album is proggy prog, with songs like "Attack Of The Demon" or "Sacrifice" sounding a lot heavier than they actually are, but that only plays to the band's strengths, as it creates something quite unique among it's peers, that would not be picked up on by imitators for many a decade. Definitely a doom classic.
