n 1974 John Howard was a marked man. Marked out for stardom, fame and huge fortune. Spoken of in the same breath as Elton John. A singer songwriter of extraordinary ability and talent who seemed to have found favour with the fickle finger of fortune and who, it seemed was destined for unimaginable greatness.

Thirty years later, it could all be about to come true.

What follows is a sketch of a life characterised by promise, disappointment, humour, optimism, resignation, rediscovery and at last, recognition all tinged with a little sadness, patience and a healthy dollop of “You’re not going to believe this darling but…”

In 1974 John was a young singer songwriter whose first London gig was at the legendary Troubadour Club where he was ‘spotted’, signed to a management deal and introduced to the mighty CBS. He was given an album deal and set to work at Abbey Road Studios where he recorded his first album ‘Kid in a Big World.’ At the same time he was commissioned to write music for a Peter Fonda Film ‘Open Season.’

Two tracks were identified as singles and both were banned by Radio 1. The first ‘Goodbye Suzie’ was thought to be too depressing because it dealt with suicide (but so did Hot Chocolate’s ‘Emma’ which got to Number 3 in the charts in early 1975.) The second ‘Family Man’ was banned because it might be construed as poor taste.

Bad, but things were about to become a site worse.

CBS began to lose interest and John’s second album ‘Technicolour Biography’ was not finished and quietly shelved. He was advised to go and collaborate on an album with Biddu, a hugely successful disco producer. So he did.

At that point John was dropped from the CBS rosta. A bitter blow and the end, it seemed of a glittering career.

John, who knew nothing else except music, started playing in clubs and restaurants in an attempt to keep the embers of his career glowing, performing at April Ashley's famous AD8 club with the aptly named Disappointer Sisters and Covent Garden's Blitz.

Then he broke his back in an accident at home (and that’s a story in itself).

After his recovery John recorded with Trevor Horn. He re-signed with CBS who wanted two singles and an album option. Once again he was overlooked.

By this time even John’s own innate optimism was wearing thin. He decided that he had given the performing side of his life his best shot and he closed the lid on his piano for good. In his own words “I put recording in the bottom drawer of my mind and tried to move on.” But fortune wasn’t done with John yet.

He took a job in A&R putting together compilation projects for Madness, Culture Club and ironically Elton John. He also worked on new recordings for Elkie Brooks and Hazell Dean.

Almost thirty years after recording ‘Kid in a Big World’ a small record company called RPM discovered the album, released it and the world snapped to attention.

The Guardian has called it “…the incredible lost album...” and a whole new generation of fans, many of whom weren’t even born when it was made, have discovered John’s skills as a singer songwriter. Stellar reviews of John’s material have followed, all raving about music that was so cruelly ignored thirty years ago.

Following his rediscovery, John put his toe in the water of creativity earlier this year when he collaborated on writing the music for the album The Dangerous Hours with Manchester poet/lyricist Robert Cochrane

At the end of 2005 John finished work on a new album called ‘As I Was Saying’, the first new album since 1975 containing his music and words, which was Cherry Red Records.

Now John has released another stunning DVD called ‘Same Bed Different Dreams’ on the Euro Visions label.
