Gatefold sleeve with 4 page insert. Sleeve has track timings and is printed in Germany, but spiral inner sleeve states Made In England. 6360 071 D on top rear of sleeve.
First issue with Spiral labels/inner and 4 page photo booklet inside gatefold sleeve.
On the label the title appears as 'Black Sabbath Vol. 4'.

In June 1972, Black Sabbath reconvened in Los Angeles to begin work on their fourth album at the Record Plant Studios. The recording process was plagued with problems, many due to substance abuse issues. In the studio, the band regularly had large speaker boxes full of cocaine delivered. While struggling to record the song "Cornucopia" after "sitting in the middle of the room, just doing drugs", Bill Ward feared that he was about to be fired from the band. "I hated the song, there were some patterns that were just horrible", Ward said. "I nailed it in the end, but the reaction I got was the cold shoulder from everybody. It was like 'Well, just go home, you're not being of any use right now.' I felt like I'd blown it, I was about to get fired".
However, the seeds were planted for what would eventually be the demise of the classic Sabbath line-up. As bassist Geezer Butler told Guitar World in 2001: "Yeah, the cocaine had set in. We went out to L.A. and got into a totally different lifestyle. Half the budget went on the coke and the other half went to seeing how long we could stay in the studio... We rented a house in Bel-Air and the debauchery up there was just unbelievable." In the same interview, Ward said: "Yes, Vol. 4 is a great album, but listening to it now, I can see it as a turning point for me, where the alcohol and drugs stopped being fun."
Gatefold sleeve: VG+. As seen in Discogs (above), this version has the German outer sleeve with D to the rear with the catalogue number.
Without doubt one of the hardest gatefolds to still find intact!! A great matt sleeve with colours that are still rich and deep. Any storage wear is only very light. There is an amount of waviness. The spine is still fully legible even though there is light storage wear visible. The opening is crisp. This still has the inner photo booklet intact and attached. There is no writing anywhere. NO sticker tears, NO seam splits etc. NO writing. The sleeve sits nice and flat and is all square. The pictures give you some impression of the quality at hand in this auction.
Comes in a white plain inner sleeve.
This is a unique investment opportunity!!! The next prog album to go completely through the roof. Finding this album in any condition at all is nearly impossible so late in the day. Get this while you still can. This value of the album is only going to go one way ... up and up ... until it will be totally unavailable at all for a reasonable price.
