THIS IS A COMPLETE GENUINE RARE UK ORIGINAL IN TOP CONDITION, AND IS A GREAT OPPORTUNITY TO BUY A COMPLETE EXAMPLE OF A HIGHLY COLLECTIBLE VINYL ALBUM.
A Complete and Rare pressing from BLACK SABBATH in SUPER clean condition, that plays beautifully with great sound from start to finish.
Black Sabbath is the 1st studio album of the English heavy metal band Black Sabbath. Released on 13 February 1970 in the United Kingdom, and later on 1 June 1970 in the United States, the album reached number eight on the UK Albums Chart and has been recognised as the pivotal album in the development of the heavy metal genre.
In August 1969 the band, who were then known as Earth, changed their name to Black Sabbath and recorded and distributed a demo version of their eponymous song. In December 1969 they recorded and released their debut single, "Evil Woman". In January 1970, the band recorded and mixed the remaining seven songs that would appear on their debut album.
Musically and lyrically the album was considered "dark" for the time. The first song on the album is based almost entirely on a tritone interval played at slow tempo on the electric guitar. The song's lyrics concern a "figure in black" which bass player Geezer Butler claims to have seen after waking up from a nightmare.
Lyrics of two other songs on the album were written with supernatural themes. "Behind the Wall of Sleep" makes reference to the H. P. Lovecraft short story Beyond the Wall of Sleep, while "The Wizard" was inspired by the character of Gandalf from The Lord of the Rings. The latter includes harmonica performed by vocalist Ozzy Osbourne.
Both the songs "Warning" and "Evil Woman" are covers of blues songs. The first was written and performed by Aynsley Dunbar's Retaliation, and the second was written and performed by the band Crow.
Released on Friday the 13th February 1970 by Vertigo Records, Black Sabbath reached number eight on the UK Album Chart. Following its US release in June 1970 by Warner Bros. Records, the album reached number 23 on the Billboard 200, where it remained for over a year, selling a million copies. It is now considered one of the most influential albums of the 20th century.
ALBUM PLAYED FOR GRADING:
Yes – brilliant! - TOP AUDIO throughout!
This great record plays up to the high visual grading and beyond. Strong, undistorted sound, the channels are clean and unstressed. The music jumps out with unbelievable definition and clarity, particularly on the percussion instruments, and vocals which come through with tremendous power. As with the bass and drums, the guitars come through crisp and clear with not a hint of distortion and barely any static to be found.
Heavy though Black Sabbath's 1st album is, it is a complex and varied collection of music, and so hard to find in clear audio condition. Worn copies can have a lot of surface sound even on musically complex and busy tracks like 'Warning'. This Original pressing has strong undistorted audio, with super clear sound and absolutely minimal background static. There is certainly no obvious interference, and NO loud pops, clicks or distortion. It really sounds amazing and plays with great sound separation and clarity! I will give a detailed account below:
Even for Black Sabbath their first album is a complex and varied collection of music, and hard to find in clear audio condition. This barely played pressing has great strong undistorted audio, with great clear sound. NO obvious interference, and NO loud pops or clicks. Any static is extremely low level, and that is unusual for any vinyl. It really sounds great and plays with great sound separation and clarity!
The album starts incredibly clear music, with so many sounds and layering that is usually inaudible. 'Black Sabbath' has a long quiet introduction and its a real test for the record. It's nearly always plagued by heavy static, loud pops and clicks, but here it plays beautifully, with very little static or detectable surface sound at all. The track bursts in with amazing power and clarity, a complex track with extremely complex audio layering, all bright and clear. There are is one light pop in the middle, but no loud clicks or obvious static.
A wonderful 'The Wizard' sounds like it has only ever been played once, its so clear. There is barely any light static during the harmonica solo, or anywhere else on this great track. Super clear bright audio with perfect separation. Still no loud pops, clicks or even a hint or distortion. 'Behind the Wall of Sleep' plays perfectly, with virtually NO background static at all, and certainly no loud pops or clicks. There is a bit of light static between this track and 'NIB', which finishes off side one with incredible clear bright sound. There is bit of very light static during the bass solo and a couple of very light static tics only, but these are so light and this is one of the clearest performances of the quiet track that I've heard. Amazing audio, the whole album just plays superbly with not a hint of distortion anywhere, just great clear sound.
'Evil Woman' powers in side 2. again with super clear audio. No loud pops or clicks, and absolutely minimal static. There is one light pop in the middle of the track, but it is very light. 'Sleeping Village' and 'Warning' play with great clear sound. Absolutely superb audio, every note is sharp and bright. Great clear audio, no pops or clicks, barely any static or surface sound during the tracks, even during the quiet sections. There is some light static at the start of 'Sleeping Village', but it is short lived and the rest of the track sounds incredible.
I really enjoyed every second of this rare ULTRA RARE second pressing of Sabbath 1st ever album. There are NO repeating tics, NO distortion, NO loud pops or clicks. This pressing plays with crisp, crystal clear audio throughout, with no loss of audio performance what so ever. Truly an incredible audio experience.
I would give this a grading of EXCELLENT PLUS to NEAR MINT condition.
THE RECORD - Visual Grading
A superb piece of glossy vinyl, and a really thick pressing. Deep clear grooves that can only be found on the original early pressings, this vinyl has been little played. In bright daylight the vinyl looks largely unmarked. Inspected under a spot light it does have a couple of ultra faint sleeve removal marks and a couple of tiny ultra light hairlines, but they are so light they are barely visible and have absolutely no effect on the sound.
This vinyl has a great sheen and shows no groove wear, and certainly no marks that can interfere with the audio at all. Unbelievable to think its over 40 years old!
Graded at NEAR MINT.
A great all round Complete and Rare example of this EARLY ROCK MASTERPIECE
Super Clear Stereo mix, which packs amazing drive and punch.
THE LABELS
The famous LARGE VERTIGO labels are in SUPERB Condition, no marks or writing, no discernible spindle wear. Great all round examples, with a few of the lightest very small spindle traces only!
Graded at NEAR MINT.
VINYL TESTED FOR ANY SIGNS OF WARPING:
Yes, NONE visible what so ever, when tested be sight and on a moving turntable.
THE COVER
This great album comes with the original rare un laminated 1st press cover in outstanding condition. The rarest of all covers, it carries the 'Dunbar', Roger Bain and Tony Hall Enterprise credits, as well as the misspelling - ''Ossie Osborne''.
These 1st Sabbath covers were very prone to wear, usually displaying major rubbing and loss or colour to the delicate surfaces and edges, major stains and ware to the flat black inner gatefold, which is nearly always covered in finger prints and smears.
This is a great example. The cover shows very little handling wear. NO spine creasing, and no corner wear. Certainly no tears or serious defects. There is no feathering to the openings, which is unusual, and very little noticeable marking on the inside. A couple of light creases and few light marks on the inner only.
Graded at EXCELLENT.
THE INNER
Original Poly lined Vertigo Swirl inner sleeve in EXCELLENT condition. Lightly creased only, there are no tears to the die cut centres, and no seem splits. The sleeve is slightly yellowed as these nearly always are, but is a great fully intact example, complete with its original poly liner and nice tight flip backs. A complete and extremely presentable original Vertigo Inner Sleeve!

.
VINYL SOUND - PLEASE NOTE:
Highest quality vinyl with clear sound is rare, and what we always aim for. We sell records that play with TOP AUDIO performance; clear sound uninterrupted by hiss or interference. Even with the cleanest vinyl pressing you will find occasional static or occasional light tics during playback, caused by a build up of dust and dirt in the wide vinyl grooves. This is clearly different from the distortion, loud pops, repeating tics or clicks that are found on heavily played and worn pieces of vinyl. Static build up can reduce when played, and we advise a clean between plays for optimal performance.
SCRUPULOUS EXAMINATION and TESTING:
All our records are play tested on highly sensitive equipment to ensure the sound quality and accuracy of description. We aim to give a precise and concise description of the sound, pointing out defects so that you know exactly what you are buying. We aim to describe our records as accurately as possible, and offer a full refund on return if for any reason you are not completely happy with the item description.
.

We use photographs of the item for sale taken with professional digital cameras. The images are designed to be as clear as possible, giving an accurate representation of the item. We aim to give sufficient and accurate detail as possible so that you know exactly what you are buying. Please let us know if you need any further information and we will be happy to oblige.
