Black Sabbath : Sabbath Bloody Sabbath 1Y2 / 2Y1

This is known as the third variant of the first pressing and it plays to a superb standard on both sides with only very minimal interference, about two seconds worth!  The sonic quality is stunning and it is clear this record has only been lightly played judging by the clarity of the audio, the stunning visual quality of the vinyl and the minimal amount of spindle wear.

This cover is in superb condition with barely any of the marking that you regularly see and the lyric inner is also very clean with just some creasing the most obvious thing.

Visual grading

The vinyl is in superb condition and still has a lovely glossy sheen with no 'dulling' of the surface.  There are no marks or scratches and only a small number of very faint hairlines on each side which obviously have no affect on the audio.  The run out grooves are very clean as are the labels which have only very minimal spindle wear.

Play grading

'Sabbath Bloody Sabbath' plays with stunning quality from the very first groove - Iommi's intro has no 'background' at all.  From then on there is much to admire!  There is no interference and the depth and power of the audio is outstanding.  Even the quieter sections play with great clarity.  The 'high octane' finish is nigh on perfect with only a couple of minor static ticks at the end of the fade out.  A Mint- grade is easily deserved here.

'A National Acrobat also plays to a superb standard with no intrusion on the audio.  There really is no deterioration in sonic quality and it still has that typical deep rich Sabbath sound.  There are no clicks or pops, no static or crackle and Mint- is again an honest appraisal of the audio.  The ending by the way is just incredible!

Time to come down a level and 'Fluff' then plays beautifully for the vast majority and every note is so clean and precise.  There are two dull sounding clicks in the middle section caused by a tiny speck that just refuses to move (!) but aside from that it plays exceptionally well.  2/3 very light ticks towards the end but nothing intrusive.  This is Ex+ but as you can the majority is certainly better than that.

'Sabbra Cadabra' ends the side with stunning power and depth from start to finish with no sign of any interference.  Every section plays with imperious quality and that includes the percussive end section.  Mint-

The intro on 'Killing Yourself To Live' is close to perfect with only a couple of seconds of barely audible static and it then plays with immense power and clarity for the remainder.  You could not wish to find better audio than this, the playback is breathtaking and there is no distortion on the top end.  A sensational Mint- version.

'Who Are You' has barely any static on the intro and continues to play extremely well but with a little static and 2/3 ticks during the mid instrumental section.  This lasts for 10 seconds at most but is quiet and hardly intrusive in my opinion.  The remainder is superb with only a little static on the fade out.  Ex+

'Looking For Today' plays with incredible sonic quality from the get go and proceeds in the same way with no intrusion on the audio at all.  This is a fantastic version and having played every second (as I always do) I can safely say this is Mint- from start to finish.

The acoustic intro on 'Spiral Architect' plays very clearly with only very minimal background static and as Iommi comes in the audio is 'as new' and it then plays with stunning precision and power.  There is just no interference and is without doubt a fantastic version when you consider it is the final track on the side.  The 'orchestral' sections play so well and from start to finish this is so impressive including the intro.  Even the 'hand clapping' at the end plays perfectly!  I would grade the intro as Near Mint- but the rest is Mint- although the minus isn't really required!  A stunning finale.

In summary this very early pressing plays with great quality for the vast majority and with barely any interference.  A couple of dull clicks on S1 and a minimal amount of non-intrusive static is about it.  The clarity, depth and warmth of the audio on both sides is very impressive and I am sure sure any fan would be pleased to have this in their collection.

The Gatefold & Lyric Inner

The cover is in lovely condition and better than so many you see today.  The edges have only very minimal wear and only the top edge of the back cover has a small 'rub' which is not a split I hasten to add!  The wide spine is in fantastic condition, 'as new' in fact with no marking and no corner wear.  The other corners are also super clean and the opening edge is pristine.  The front cover is unmarked and has only a small number of faint scratch lines that you can only see when held at a certain angle and the back cover is just as impressive.  If anything more impressive as it often has a lot of marking/fading due to it predominantly white colour.  There is no marking at all here and the inside of the gatefold is also immaculate.  A superb example overall.

The lyric inner is very clean with only one mega tiny side split and just minimal age related fading down one side.  There is some creasing however.

Play tested on my Pro-Ject Essential III Turntable / B&W 684 Speakers
