Description
This is the original 1970 Australian release of this classic Black Sabbath album. It was the second album released by the group in 1970, their first being the self titled "Black Sabbath" album which had met with some success on the UK charts, and they wanted to capitalize on that success. The title track "Paranoid" was an after thought. They had originally intended to title the album "War Pigs" after the first track on side one, but decided they needed one more track to fill out the album. The song "Paranoid" was written in the studio in two hours and the rest is history. "Paranoid" was released as a single and reached number 4 in the UK charts in 1970. This was their only UK top ten charting single. The song has become the band's signature tune and the tracks "War Pigs" and Iron Man" are still concert favourites with the band's millions of fans. The vinyl on both sides is clean and shiny with only a few minor scuffs, no scratches, skips or jumps. Both sides play loud and clear, however there is some surface noise on the run in tracks and between the tracks which is for the most part inaudible while the music is playing. It can be heard in some of the quieter passages (there's not many of those) such as "Planet Caravan" and the beginning and end of "Hand of Doom" but it does not overwhelm the music. Over all I have graded the vinyl as VG, I would grade these two tracks as G++. Both labels are clean, no writing or stickers, and this first pressing has the classic Vertigo "swirl" label taking up the whole of the label on side one. The gate fold cover is still rigid, no tears or splits, however the front and the back have significant ring wear and some small creases from years of storage. These first pressings had a low sheen finish on the front and back covers, which was easily scuffed and even keeping it in a plastic outer sleeve, as I have for many years, did not prevent this from happening. The pictures of the band on the inside of the gate fold are in good condition, both clean with no writing or stickers. I have graded the cover as G+ due to the severe ring wear.
