Label Conditions: Both immaculate as is the record itself. Barely a spindle trace to be seen and beautifully pressed. Put simply: a record that can be enjoyed to the absolute maximum without shelling-out for a mint Vertigo copy.

Cat Number: WWA 006 (note this follows 005 that was the then new album ‘Sabbath Bloody Sabbath’ issued in 1973).

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 116 grams. Not really heavy, but superbly pressed on pure vinyl, hence fantastic clean sound quality.

Rarity: This album is not seen often on this new label introduced in 1973, it was then pressed later on NEMS which I rate far less. Originally issued on Vertigo in 1970, I have seen far more on that label than this one and that is the honest truth. But as we all know, these fetch high prices for excellent to near mint copies. So for those not wanting to spend vast sums for a label, this one makes perfect sense. This barely played 1973 pressed record sounds fantastic, and with a ‘blind’ play, you would never know any difference. When slightly later copies are available in such beautiful condition, I have no qualms in offering them. I try to cater for ALL collectors no matter what their budgets or priorities. For those simply wanting the analogue experience of the older classics, this fits the bill perfectly.

Brief Artist & Album Info: Issued to scorn and damnation by the critics in 1970, but eventually universally loved by fans of heavy rock. Ozzy gave the finger and they thrived and became superstars of the genre. Black Sabbath played real heavy metal – an awesome quartet that were very dark, with real menace, sang songs of doom, gloom, war and the occult - this is what they did best and no-one ever came close to matching them. Even today, after hearing this classic a hundred times, the sound of that rain falling on the opening grooves and the loud thunderclap with the distant tolling bell sends a shiver down my spine – play, if possible at maximum volume – this copy can more than handle it – if you system can! For full effect, have the cover in your hands at the same time - the ghostly spectresque girl standing in the woods will make you shudder. What is this that stands before me?; Figure in black that points at me. screams ‘The Prince of Darkness’ and just before the band go into overdrive, he lets out with blood curdling power ‘Oh no, no, please God help me’ brilliant stuff. The opening track ‘Black Sabbath’ has to be one of rock’s defining moments - the birth of metal and the critics had to fade away. It’s hard to believe this album was issued way back in the early 1970s, and this still early ‘virgin’ WWA pressing from 1973 does it maximum justice.

Led by Ozzy Osbourne, now a cult figure extraordinaire but let’s not forget the other three: Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler and Bill Ward. The pure heaviness and phenominal bass-heavy sound they produced was breathtaking (and still is). I saw a fairly young Black Sabbath back in the late 1970s at Hammersmith Odeon and it remains entrenched and vivid in my memory. All the Vertigo era material was played, and how. This is a classic metal album, the cover is chilling, the text on the inverted cross inside is as dark as the music inside. An album to be played loud, as loud as possible. I still remember that huge stack of Marshall’s on stage with all the speakers being driven hard and really getting the air moving. These early albums have an in-built power and quality brings it out (as well as volume). Just listen to the detail of the splashing rain and the tremenous thunderclaps at the beginning. The bass grinds and punches with awesome power riffs - it can shake the foundations, the drums pound and the cymbals crash, the guitars soar into nirvana and of course Ozzy’s blood curdling screams speak for themselves - oh nowwwwww!!! Forget your lightweight soundalikes, nobody does it better than Sabbath. This stunning lesson in gloom was rarely bettered, even by them, the distant bell tolls… and still falls the rain – magnificent!!!

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): an unlaminated gatefold format with matt, smooth surfaces, the artwork largely the same as the 1970 version. This cover actually looks better than my grading, but an allowance is made for a small personal dedication/name inside the gatefold near the top.

Cover Front: This famous front cover looks practically Mint as made – the ghostly figure front looks magnificent as seen in close-up. Ultimately fresh and attractive.

Cover Back: Largely the same with just a small toning spot near the top right corner, possibly a minor price sticker residue and tiny pull. The lack of grubbiness, creasing and ringwear to both front and back far outweight any tiny blemish like this.

Cover Inner Gatefold: There is a small neat dedication/name inside the ‘B’ and ‘K’ of the large title near the top left area – it hardly draws the eye’s attention and detracts little. This apart, the inside is as superb as the outer faces.

Top Edges: Both fantastic with barely any wear at all, equally straight and near flush.

Bottom Edges: As above, any rub traces tiny and light.

Right Edge(s), and Type: The front edge has a real tucked and folded edge, not machine cut. The back entrance edges are largely sharp and neat, any thickening or burring minimal and light as seen viewed end-on. No enhancements or trimming.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with mimimal compression and folded close to square, so the edges meet up near flush. Unlike so many of the originals, all text is present and unfaded or rubbed.

Corners: Any tip rubs are small and light, with very fine to excellent shape retained with no dinks.

Cover Summary: A really impressive cover that sets the bar high. This seldom wears well on the earlier matt versions. The only real issue for the purist is the writing inside, but this has far more positives than negatives and looks very impressive, few will be found better overall.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: a plain solid white unlined inner. Gently aged with the usual darkening of the seam edge adhesive and a little crinkle near the top of the back. Little else with all edges unsplit with no repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): and only under my very bright ‘grading’ lamp are such critical gradings made, in normal room light, this looks practically Mint as made. A superb visual copy that plays to nigh-on perfection from start to finish. Very clean with excellent shine, freshness and quite solidly pressed. Any surface traces minuscule, this copy without any doubt has hardly been handled, let alone played. Also beautifully pressed on pure vinyl. This is the perfect copy for any analogue fan wishing to hear the vintage classics without the potential huge cost of the Spiral originals.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This dark metal masterpiece plays even above its high visual grading with practically nothing to fault. Massively powerful distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is fantastic with a wide dynamic range and very heavy sound, best enjoyed loud to bring out the power embedded into totally unworn grooves. Now pressed to perfection on the new WWA label, this offers all the detail, power and grace of the original and this one barely even played. Laden with massively powerful riffs, the prince of darkness rarely sounded better. Any surface sounds barely even register and this is a very clean pressing. This heavy metal classic has it’s odd quieter moments too, but not that many, but these also play beautifully and few available copies on whatever label will better this. Both channels are clean and sharp, I certain this record has been hardly played, or even handled, also very well stored and looked after. Tracking is effortless and all is focused with no clipping or sound degrading. The difference being it has never subjected to worn or heavy stylus abuse, this has wonderful gut-grinding dynamics and the analogue format really is unbeatable for the heaviest rock available. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this classic debut. A copy that will prove very difficult indeed to find better for pure clean audio quality. An album that spawned a host of immitators but none (for me anyway) even come close. Unreserved recommendation – real metal, no glam, just gloom – these four giants in the world of heavy rock are living legends and long may they continue – here, the devil is in the detail, and this sounds fantastic – Oh Lord Yeah!!!!!!!

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
