Black Boy Shine aka Harold Holiday 1936 Vocalion Record 03484 and the ref# SA 2554, for Brown House Blues and Back Home Blues.
Here is a record that can shake up some Robert Johnson history thoughts! This is a recording done by Black Boy Shine aka Harold Holiday in November of 1936, at what is now the Gunter Hotel in San Antonio, Texas. This is the same time period that Robert Johnson also recorded at this same location. In fact, if you delve through the history of both of these recordings you will see that they happened within days of each other, These were also the only artists that recorded for Vocalion during this time period and at this same location. Meaning that it was more than likely that they knew of each other and probably would hang together at the hotel or at the studio. It is interesting that Back Home Blues and Sweet Home Chicago have a similar style and concept. This record is almost an E-, but because of the label condition, I had to grade hard and give it a VG++ instead.
A great and very hard to find record related to Texas blues and a historic day in recording with one of the greatest blues legends, Robert Johnson.
Other than his Robert Johnson encounter, not much is known of Black Boy Shine, aka Harold Holiday, except that he was based in a section of Houston, TX (which may have been his home) called West Dallas. In 1936 and 1937 he recorded for Vocalion in San Antonio and Dallas (both sessions recorded just after Robert Johnson), and left behind 18 sides. A smooth vocalist and pianist, his music had a surprising elegance despite the barrelhouse environment reflected in songs like "Dog House Blues" and "Back Home Blues." By 1948, he was said to have been near death from tuberculosis.
