Toronto's The Birthday Massacre began life in 1999 as Imagica. That was an early name, but they soon swapped it for the now-familiar moniker, as they embraced a blend of new wave sheen, hard-rock muscle and a gothic fairytale felt-sense. Built on the long-standing core of members Chibi, Rainbow and Owen, they grew an audience unusually early, thanks to their canny use of pre-social-media forums and file-sharing sites, helping the 2004 EP 'Violet' - later exploded to full album form - emerge as their big break. This is that album version: wrought with an oozing, blood-plum tension, and boughed by atmospheric anthem-rock growers like 'Play Dead' and 'Holiday'.
