Description
Decca record album set No. A-550 is "Merry Christmas" featuring Bing Crosby. It is dated 1945 and contains four 10-inch 78 RPM records, but only three of them are original to the set, so let's list those first:
Decca # 23777 -- "Silent Night" and "Adeste Fideles" by Bing Crosby
Decca # 23778 -- "White Christmas" and "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" by Bing Crosby
Decca # 23281 -- "Jingle Bells" and "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town" by Bing Crosby and the Andrews Sisters.
Through a process of elimination, the missing record (Decca # 23779) would have contained sides 5 and 6 of the set, namely "I'll Be Home for Christmas" and "Faith of Our Fathers" by Bing Crosby. Instead, the fourth record in the album is:
Decca # 24204 -- "Friendly Mountains" and "The Kiss in Your Eyes" by Bing Crosby, originally issued as Sides 1 and 2 of Decca album set # A-620, "The Emperor Waltz."
In terms of condition, all four records are still nice and shiny, but with condition issues that I'll take one by one. Let's start with "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen", which has a needle dig right at the start, which causes a couple of needle jumps during the introduction before the actual singing starts. Second, the one with the Andrews Sisters has a pinch or chip at the edge, which is still attached but in danger of flaking off at the slightest provocation. It causes audible ticking for the first few revolutions, which will be lost forever if the flake breaks off. (and I can't guarantee that it will even survive shipping, so be prepared). Other than that, there were no skips or jumps, and very little in the way of general background hiss, but there are scuffs and dull spots on some of the sides, which cause scattered passages of ticking or swishing. Because of variations in tracking ability, filtering devices and needle weights, I can offer no guarantees as to how well they will play on your equipment.
The album itself is in solid and functional condition, with the pocket seams intact, and just typical light wear around the edges and spine.
