BILLY R COUVSON "Bongo Sensational Soul" (Bongo Records 1977). Subtitled "Ching Chong China" this is a rare, unique trip into the depths of the San Francisco/Oakland funk-club-eccentric-PCP-anything scene of the mid-1970s. Billy Couvson raps, mutters and grooves while bongos, vibes, percussion and anything else within reach provide beats and rhythm. He chuckles to himself inexplicably, leaving us to try and sort it all out 30 years later. Those familar with the Charlie Tweddle album from a similar time and place will find Tweddle's African-American counterpart here. The real thing -- you will be amazed. Billy Couvson released this album on his own Bongo label and pressed very few copies of it. This LP is much better than his 45s or later recordings... one of the major pieces of the scene. Check out the Acid Archives for an enthusiastic review. Only offered once before on eBay. This is a strong copy which looks and plays very clean despite the do-it-yourself pressing. The cover has some minor shelf- and seam wear. Condition is M-/VG++.
I have been collecting and dealing rare 1960s-70s records and items for 25 years. All items are graded M/M-/Ex/Vg++/Vg+/Vg/Vg-/G/F/P based on both aural and visual aspects. “M” corresponds to 10/10 on a 1-10 scale, while “P” equals 1/10. I rarely offer records below Vg+. This is a grading system used by many LP dealers, and I use it for other types of items as well. Grading for LPs/45s is disc/sleeve. Defects or unusual properties of the item will be mentioned specifically. Feel free to inquire during the auction.
