This classic collection - lovingly assembled by John Hammond Sr. (the Gentleman who first signed Billie Holiday for Columbia and gave her a first big break) , Jackie Gleason and Frank Driggs (the same Frank Driggs who compiled the two classic Robert Johnson volumes) collects in one place the prime of Billie Holiday - her immortal early sides, when her voice was in a full bloom, and at the peak of its power and finesse. While most people are familiar with Billie Holiday from her later, emotionally devastating performances, very few pay attention to her early sides, which is a huge, catastrophic mistake. Hear this, and see what you have been missing. As much as her later period is emotionally draining, the early sides are joyful, exuberant, sexy, lively and optimistic. This is the Lady Day when she was young, in love, and happy. AND, LEST WE FORGET: this box set has seen at least four reissues: second pressing on "guaranteed fidelity" label; third pressing on "mono" label and fourth pressing on red-and-yellow Columbia label from the 70's -- but good luck finding this beauty on the original, 6-eye label!!!! This is next-to-impossible to find in decent condition. The set contains just about every single memorable Billie Holiday Columbia performance, and many of the standards and tunes that she, herself, gave life and fame to. Included are such gems as: Them there eyes; A Fine Romance; They can't take that away from me ; I can't get started' The man I love; Body and Soul ; All of Me; God Bless the child; Gloomy Sunday and many, many, many other. The box set includes a beautifully written and researched 10-page booklet with introduction by John Hammond Sr., and Jackie Gleason, plus some photographs we have never seen before. All three records come in original Columbia custom inner sleeves, which the label was using in the late 50's/early 60's

 (IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL  AS  NEAR MINT. Some VERY LIGHT AND SUPERFICIAL abrasions – mostly sleeve scuffs -  are (barely) visible, but are probably inaudible,  and do not affect visual integrity or beauty of the vinyl. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The records come in their original stock inner sleeves. (one of the three sleeves is missing)

(c)           The box set comes with its original BOOKLET included!

(d)          The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(e)           Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT EXCELLENT OR VERY GOOD+++.

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-         Cover has JUST A HINT of ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 1.

-         Cover shows JUST A HINT of yellowing on front side, apparently from aging.  (nothing significant)

-         One of the four corners on the lid (top part) of the box has separated (split).   (nothing significant)

-         Back panel has a small peel-off mark, probably from the careless removal of the price sticker (because the peeled mark is black and is on black background, it is practically invisible, and must be viewed under certain angle to be noticed)

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

-        No cut-out (drill) holes.

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No dirt/dust rubbing stains (friction marks caused by rubbing against other covers)

-        No wrinkles or creases

-        No writing

-        No stamps

-        No tearing: no chips, dents or nicks on the seams

-        No stains

-        No mold or mildew spots

-        No stickers or labels

-        No water damage

-        No razor marks, scratches, pressure marks, lines, streaks, or  cuts.

-        No warping

-        No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover

-        No glue traces or wax residue.

-        No bar codes

-        No RIAA stamps or stickers.
