This classic collection lovingly assembles in one place the prime of Billie Holiday - her immortal mid-period DECCA sides (1945-51), when her voice was in a full bloom, and at the peak of its power and finesse. While most people are familiar with Billie Holiday from her later, emotionally devastating performances, very few pay attention to her early sides, which is a huge, catastrophic mistake. Hear this, and see what you have been missing. As much as her later period is emotionally draining, the early sides are technically amazing and extremely impressive. This LP is next-to-impossible to find in decent condition and we are delighted to find the finest specimen we have seen in years. The set contains many memorable Billie Holiday performances, and many of the standards and tunes that she, herself, gave life and fame to.

·                               THE RECORD

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS STRONG VG++, JUST A NOTCH BELOW NEAR MINT. A few light abrasions (probably just sleeve scuffs inflicted in storage over the years) ARE VISIBLE, but they appear fairly  insignificant relative to the overall condition of the vinyl, and are only moderately visually distracting. For most part, the vinyl looks impeccable, without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record has a "deep groove" (an indent in the label about 1/2-inch from the edge of the label, which on SOME labels is associated with very early or first pressings).

(c)           The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(d)          This is the original flat-edge pressing

(e)           The record is STILL in its original thumbnailed, white inner, perforated DECCA plastic baggy, which has - apparently with success - shielded the record from the harmful impact of elements over many years!

(f)            Stereo copies of this album are NOT known to exist.

(g)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·                               THE COVER

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT VERY GOOD+(+)

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        Cover has all three seams (top, bottom and spine) partially split,  as follows:

-        Top seam: between 2 and 4 inches  / 5 to 10 centimeters.; This split seam was delicately taped by the previous owner with a piece of transparent scotch tape

-        Bottom seam: less than 1 inch / 2.5 centimeters.

-        Spine: between 1 and 2 inches  / 2.5 to 5 centimeters.

-        Cover has some visible fraying/tattering on all three seams

-        Back cover has a small peel-off mark, probably from the careless removal of the price sticker. (less than 1 square inch in size)

-        Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 2  (front side) and 3 (back side)

-        Cover has some tiny, faint writing on its back side (a small filing code written in one corner)

-        Back cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record),  probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.

-        Cover shows some light yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging   (nothing significant).

-        Cover has two corners slightly worn / dinged  (nothing significant)
