Bill Haley is the neglected hero of early rock & roll. Elvis Presley and Buddy Holly are ensconced in the heavens, transformed into veritable constellations in the rock music firmament, their music respected by writers and scholars as well as the record-buying public, virtually every note of music they ever recorded theoretically eligible for release. And among the living rock & roll pioneers, Chuck Berry is given his due in the music marketplace and by the history books, and Bo Diddley is acknowledged appropriately in the latter, even if his music doesn't sell the way it should. Yet Bill Haley -- who was there before any of them, playing rock & roll before it even had a name, and selling it in sufficient quantities out of a small Pennsylvania label to attract attention from the major labels before Presley was even recording in Memphis -- is barely represented by more than a dozen of his early singles, and recognized by the average listener for exactly two songs among the hundreds that he recorded; and he's often treated as little more than a glorified footnote, an anomaly that came and went very quickly, in most histories of the music. The truth is, Bill Haley came along a lot earlier than most people realize and the histories usually acknowledge, and he went on making good music for years longer than is usually recognized.

Bill Haley & His Comets came very close to a comeback of sorts on this album, after the dubious Rockin' Around the World LP. Chicks was what passed for a concept album in 1958, built on songs named for women. It was the first LP by Haley to be issued in stereo, and it started life in a very promising fashion, growing out of the number 22 placement for the single "Skinny Minnie" early in 1958. Not quite enough of what Haley and his band came up with was worthy of an album release, but there's some good dance music here and some not-bad rock & roll in spots. Even on the failed tracks they try hard, Rudy Pompilli honking away on numbers like "Whoa Mabel!" and chestnuts like "Dinah" and totally inappropriate songs like "Ida, Sweet As Apple Cider" to little avail in terms of first-rate music. Pompilli, Haley, and lead guitarist Frannie Beecher do succeed with "Corrine, Corrina," and come surprisingly close to turning Irving Berlin's "Marie" (which had been a number one hit for Tommy Dorsey 23 years earlier) into a rock & roll number -- almost, but not quite -- even deliberately echoing "Rock Around the Clock" at one moment. "B.B. Betty," featuring Billy Williamson on lead vocals, is also a solid number and kind of catchy, and their version of "Sweet Sue, Just You" isn't embarrassing, even if it's not groundbreaking rock & roll.

·                               CONDITION:

·                               RECORD

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS EXCELLENT. This is one of those albums that are somewhat difficult to grade. It is somewhere between VG++ and NEAR MINT, just a notch below NEAR MINT. A few light abrasions ARE visible, but they are extremely shallow, superficial  and only moderately visually distracting (nothing significant). For the most part, the vinyl looks impeccable without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new (A SUPERFICIAL "HAIRLINE" SCUFF EXTENDS ACROSS ABOUT 3/4 OF THE SIDE 1, ALMOST CERTAINLY WILL NOT BE AUDIBLE)

(b)            The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)           Stereo  pressing of this title is much rarer, and by far more preferable to its mono  counterpart. The mix is more graphic, the sound resolution more precise, and the channel separation (which does not exist on mono version) adds a whole new dimension to the music. Also, the stereo mixes are (by definition) somewhat different than on the mono version. We estimate that mono copies of this album outnumber stereo copies  by a ratio of at least 10:1.

(d)          The record has a "deep groove" (an indent in the label about 1/2-inch from the edge of the label, which on SOME labels is associated with very early or first pressings).

(e)             The record comes in a poly-lined 'Made in England' inner sleeve, which has - apparently with success - shielded the vinyl from the harmful impact of elements over many years!

(f)            Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       COVER (THIS IS THE ORIGINAL, LAMINATED, GLOSSY COVER):

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT EXCELLENT OR VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-         Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 2 (front side) and 4 (back side)

-         Back cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record),  probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.

-         Cover shows some light yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging   (nothing significant).

-         Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the seams

-         Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine

-         Minor glue residue stain noted in the label area on the back side of the cover

-         Back cover has a small peel-off mark, probably from the careless removal of the price sticker  (less than 1/16th square inch in size).

-         Back cover has a small original price sticker, which may be possible to remove with a little effort (we did not attempt to)

-         Cover has a small, rectangular, sticker residue (small yellowish discoloration from the removed price sticker)

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

-        No split seams

-        No cut-out (drill) holes.

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No writing

-        No stamps

-        No tearing: no chips, dents or nicks on the seams

-        No mold or mildew spots

-        No water damage

-        No razor marks, scratches, pressure marks, lines, streaks, or  cuts.

-        No warping

-        No bar codes

-        No RIAA stamps or stickers.
