Description
This is the original 1962 first pressing of Bill Evans' glorious masterpiece LP, Waltz for Debby, on Riverside mono deep-groove RLP-399. Has the same catalog number on the label, unlike the second pressing. Absolutely beautiful quiet and sophisticated cool jazz featuring Paul Motian and Scott LeFaro. This copy is quite nice: the disc appears to be about VG+, with only a few light hairlines and one or two very small marks, and some of that spotting that comes from the acid in the paper sleeve, which isn't damage. Very shiny and remarkably clean looking. The play has some light noise here and there, and some ticks in a few places. The first track has some light ticking and background crackle for the first half or so and then quiets down to EX. The second track plays beautifully with a moment of about three light ticks, and the occasional stray crackle, but mostly just beautifully. About the same with the third track. The second side also starts off with some crackle and light ticks but it isn't persistent. Plays great for a bit, then the ticking returns during the bass solo, and disappears again. The second tune has much less noise and the third and final one plays quite beautifully all the way through. I don't have access to an ultrasound cleaner but I suspect it would clean up the sound quite a bit, as I really don't see all that many markings on the disc. I have cleaned it but I think an ultrasound machine might make a bigger difference. I can't guarantee it, but it really looks like it should play almost perfectly. Weird. Anyhow the cover has a split about halfway across the bottom edge, and some corner wear at the bottom left and top left, and a touch of light wear overall, but not bad! Barely any ringwear and a fully readable spine, this cover looks remarkably nice. So this isn't a perfect copy but thoroughly delightful to hear and quite nice overall.
