BERNARD PRETTY PURDIE LP SET - THIS IS OUR ONE AND ONLY SET FOREVER

STARTS WITH THE TREMENDOUSLY RARE SOUNDTRACK - BERNARD PURDIE LIALEH  ORIGINAL MOVIE SOUNDTRACK -  first became acquainted with this little ditty via a video clip from the film in which Purdie and band (which included Horace Ott and Seldon Powel) and jamming away at a Jazz club... Purdie is poundin' the drum skins (as only Purdie can) and singing in a Donny Hathaway-ish voice the funky but Jazzy theme song (badly out of sink) while a topless girl is dancing around the stage... Between the sweatiness of the musicians into their thing, and the moves of the dancer, the scene is pretty hot, and no, I'm not making this up!) - - of course the young couples are at their tables digging the music.

Naturally, I knew I had to get the soundtrack... and naturally I had to do a bit of research... Apparently it was part of the porno chic and blaxploitation boom... and ticket sales were boosted by the presence of Purdie, even at the time the most recorded session man on the planet.

As for the soundtrack, the first two tracks are indeed quite funky, (Well, the good'uns are Lialeh, Touch Me Again and Hap'nin') - - on the other hand, there are a number of Millie Jackson type tunes... plus Conscious, which features kinda of a twangy Bobby Womack vibe, with reverential horns and a real greasy Hammond (I imagine a slow lovin' for the first time, or driving down the city streets on a rainy night contemplating type theme...) -- Pass Me Not is also down home reverentially Sunday morning gospelly with the piano/organ and over amped Hammond. - - and then there's a boogie woogie type blues called ALL PINK ON THE INSIDE.

All in all, definitely a great tid bit of '70s culture... and an excellent taste of rare Purdie funk...

All you need to know about this one is Bernard Purdie from the late 60's. Loaded with the usual session guys. Bernard is one of the best drummers of all time. A GROOVE MASTER!!!!!!! Alot more explosive in this one. not his usual laid-back, awesomely deft grooves. GREAT STUFF!!!!!!!!!!!!

Organ master Jimmy McGriff may have studied formally at Juilliard and at Philadelphia's Combe College of Music, but there's nothing fancy about his music. It's basic to the bone, always swinging and steeped in blues and gospel. McGriff's brand of jazz is about feeling. "That's the most important thing," he says.

Richard "Groove" Holmes was an American jazz organist who performed in the hard bop and soul jazz genre. He is best known for his 1965 recording of "Misty", and is considered a precursor of acid jazz. Holmes' first album, on Pacific Jazz with guest Ben Webster, was recorded in March 1961. His sound was immediately recognizable in the upper register, but even more so because of his virtuosity in creating, undoubtedly, the most rapid, punctuating, and pulsating basslines of all the jazz organists.

Drummer Bernard Purdie moved to New York in 1960 after finishing high school and played with (among others), Lonnie Youngblood before landing his first hit with King Curtis. This led to his engagement with Aretha Franklin in 1970 - the beginning of an unparalleled career. Since then, Purdie has been a regular guest in the studios of the stars of Jazz, Soul, and Rock, working together with Paul Butterfield as well as Larry Coryell, Miles Davis, Hall & Oates, Al Kooper, Herbie Mann, Todd Rundgren and Cat Stevens, as well as regularly producing his own solo albums under his own name.
