Few composers have left such a footprint on the American songbook quite like Irving Berlin, and his work on the 1954 film White Christmas crystallises this knack for seasonal sentiment with a craftsman's rigor. Over a dozen pieces - 'Sisters', 'Blue Skies', and 'Count Your Blessings (Instead Of Sheep)' - this classic Christmas soundtrack hears performances from stars Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye, Rosemary Clooney and Vera-Ellen. With early 50s orchestras and choral backing, we hear inflections of ragtime, jazz-inflected pop, and Tin Pan Alley stylings - the perfect match for the film, a postwar slapstick chalet love tangle. A wintry legacy indeed wards this timeless soundtrack.
