Probably the best known of the jazz-inspired television soundtracks of the late 1950s other than Peter Gunn, M Squad features a title track by Count Basie and a set of 11 additional tracks authored by John Williams, Benny Carter, and conductor Stanley Wilson. Williams, who would go on to write the music for Jaws, Star Wars, et al., was at that time a jazz pianist and composer of growing reputation, and his work on this album really moves -- "The Chase" is almost more distinctive than the title tune (which eventually became the basis for the satirical series Police Squad). Carter's music makes up the bulk of the material here, and it is rich and moody, as well as featuring some of the best passages for the players to improvise on. "The Search" gives the composer a chance to stretch out on the alto sax and offers some beautiful passages for trumpets and trombones. John Williams also shows himself as an excellent jazz pianist throughout in this, the very first soundtrack success of his career. Stanley Wilson's conducting of the jazz orchestra is superb, giving ample room for the players to open up on the solos, and his compositions, while more conventional in nature than Carter's or Williams', are effective as well. Originally released as part of RCA's Living Stereo series, both the old LP and the new CD reissue offer extraordinarily rich and close sound with very detailed musical textures.

"RCA Living Stereo" recordings - mostly classical, but also a handful of pop and easy listening titles - were made under the supervision of the most knowledgeable technicians and engineers on earth. The sound is simply amazing. On mint or near mint copies , quiet passages are so quiet - and the surface noise so conspicuously absent - that you will not even realize that your stylus has hit the surface of the record until the music starts. The highs are high, and the lows are very low. You are going to need a subwoofer and a hypersensitive tweeter to express some of these tonal ranges appropriately. This is the music for the ears, heart, soul, mind and guts alike.

CONDITION:
RECORD
(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)
(a) WE GRADE THE VINYL AS NEAR MINT. Some VERY LIGHT AND SUPERFICIAL abrasions – mostly sleeve scuffs - are (barely) visible, but are probably inaudible, and do not affect visual integrity or beauty of the vinyl. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.
(b) The record has a "deep groove" (an indent in the label about 1/2-inch from the edge of the label, which on SOME labels is associated with very early or first pressings).
(c) The record comes in the original stock inner sleeve.
(d) The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!
(e) Stereo pressing of this title is much rarer, and by far more preferable to its mono counterpart. The mix is more graphic, the sound resolution more precise, and the channel separation (which does not exist on mono version) adds a whole new dimension to the music. Also, the stereo mixes are (by definition) somewhat different than on the mono version. We estimate that mono copies of this album outnumber stereo copies by a ratio of at least 5:1.
(f) Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!
