BEAUTIFUL 50 years ago first press :::: released in 1969 of a GREAT pre - STEPPENWOLF recording. Much better than remembered and a considerable one for re-discovery or first time listen ~~ it is live in San Francisco when the band were called THE SPARROW ,,,and just months later they changed their name to Steppenwolf. The reason this album goes by Steppenwolf was to capitalize on the groups fame in the late 60's. In '66 - '67 The Sparrow were springing back and forth from Los Angeles to San Francisco playing all the "hot spots" gathering a strong following. SPARROW or early Steppenwolf were immediately recognized by their "something special" type of impressive - "happening now-sound," -- highly electrified, burning the blues, psychedelic fuzzed-up & howling! By the time you get to the 21:36 psyched-out version of "The Pusher" , afterward, well, you're exhausted, and maybe even on the floor!

Brief History:
Before Steppenwolf was formed in 1967 several of it’s members had been in the Canadian rock band known as the “Sparrow”. The Sparrow had migrated from Toronto, to New York City to Los Angeles, and finally to the San Francisco bay area. Among various venues there, which included the Avalon and Fillmore ballrooms, the Sparrow played a club called the Matrix. In 1967, unbeknownst to the group, the club manager recorded a couple of the Sparrow shows. These recordings were released here by ABC Dunhill in 1969 because STEPPENWOLF were busy touring and were not ready for the next studio album. While the recording quality of the “Early Steppenwolf” is raw, it is very clear and professional, capturing the band exactly as they sounded -- in a wealth of cool garage blues tunes and what is truly a collectors item, a side long 21:36 psychedelic version of “The Pusher you get on no other record.
