1966 UK 1st *STEREO* PRESSING LP

**NEAR MINT**

This superb UK 1966 1st STEREO pressing is on the black & yellow Parlophone label: PCS 7009 Both labels carry both the 'Sold in UK..' texts & 'Gramophone Co..' rims. The side 2 label has the initial first short run, extremely rare, incorrect 'Dr. Robert' spelling. An 'KT' tax/price code is embossed in the centre of the side 2 label.

Housed in a NEAR MINT front laminated, tri-flipback 'Garrod & Lofthouse printed cover with an a front 'stereo' logo.  Complete with its original Emitex lined inner sleeve in excellent condition, with no cuts or tears.

Matrix numbers: YEX 605-1 & YEX 606-1 Stamper numbers: 2/GO & 2/GR

Labels: EXCELLENT PLUS

A clean set with just some light spindle trails to each hole but no other wear.  They really show very nicely, does not have any white wear rub at the spindle hole.

Visual: EXCELLENT PLUS

Both surfaces of this outstanding copy retain all of their deep-gloss with no clouded or dull patches. Close inspection in strong daylight reveals some faint marks from inner-sleeve removal but no further significant blemishes or any scratches. Close & careful examination directly beneath my powerful halogen desk lamp shows nothing more than a sparkling rainbow gloss but no further signs of wear. This quality, heavy copy lies 100% flat on the turntable with no signs or dishing or warping.

Audio: EXCELLENT PLUS

Plays with great dynamics, clean and sharp as you would expect...the vinyl here is excellent near mint.

As Clean as you will find for this, no tears, splits, or writing, clean and white triple flipback....awesome.

About the Dr. Robert (on the first press stereo label):

WHEN FIRST RELEASED IN AUGUST 1966 ALL COPIES ACTUALLY CARRIED THE " DR ROBERT " LABELS AND SLEEVES. THIS WAS SWIFTLY CORRECTED TO " DOCTOR ROBERT " ON THE LABELS BUT FOR SOME REASON THE SLEEVE WAS NEVER CORRECTED, CERTAINLY FOR AS LONG AS IT REMAINED IN PRODUCTION PROBABLY AS LATE AS UP TO THE MID 1980'S.

THE FACT THAT THE SLEEVE WAS NEVER CORRECTED PROBABLY IS PART OF THE REASON FOR THE MYTH  THAT IT WAS THE " DOCTOR ROBERT " LABELS THAT ARE THE EARLIEST. ANOTHER REASON IS THAT ON MONO COPIES " DR. ROBERT " LABELS ARE NOT AT ALL UNCOMMON. HOWEVER THAT IS NOT ANYTHING LIKE THE CASE WITH STEREO COPIES.

AT THE TIME OF RELEASE ( AND PROBABLY FOR ANOTHER COUPLE OF YEARS ) MONO WAS BY FAR THE MORE DEMANDED FORMAT AND SO EARLY MONO PRESSINGS OUTNUMBER STEREO COPIES LITERALLY BY MANY 10'S TO 1, INDEED STEREO'S OFTEN WERE NOT EVEN STOCKED BY MOST LOCAL RECORD SHOPS AND WERE USUALLY ONLY AVAILABLE BY SPECIAL ORDER.

IT IS PROBABLY THIS REASON WHY MONO DR. ROBERTS ARE FAIRLY COMMON BUT STEREO DR ROBERT'S ARE INCREDIBLY RARE. BY THE TIME THE DR. ROBERT LABELS WERE REPLACED MANY MONO'S HAD ALREADY BEEN SENT TO THE RECORD SHOPS, BUT, BECAUSE EMI PRESSED RECORDS ACCORDING TO DEMAND, COMPARATIVELY FEW STEREO'S.

ACCORDINGLY " DR ROBERT " STEREO LABELS ARE ONE OF THE RAREST OF ALL THE YELLOW BLACK LABEL VARIANTS, PROBABLY AS RARE AS MATRIX 606-1 MONO COPIES, AND IF YOU DOUBT THIS JUST CHECK ON EBAY. OF THE FEW Y/B STEREO COPIES THAT YOU FIND ( AS ALL Y/B STEREO VARIANTS ARE RARE ANYWAY ) I 'D CARE TO BET THAT ALL OF THEM WILL HAVE " DOCTOR ROBERT " LABELS WITH THE EXCEPTION OF THIS COPY!

To Quote Frank Daniels in his identification guide for British LPs: "Early copies of Revolver list the song "Doctor Robert" as "Dr. Robert." These copies sell for as much as double what a normal copy brings."

MINT is unplayed, sealed, or play-graded mint.

MINT MINUS is like new but probably played once or twice...most would grade this mint

NEAR MINT is near new with some slight signs of play...an extremely clean record

VERY GOOD PLUS is collectible but might have some light sleeve marks and some light noise...still plays very well with no major issues.
