Description
Original 3rd State STEREO cover of this infamous album cover, appears to have been professionally "steam" peeled. The image itself is in amazing condition, with very minimal wear, NO staining, No fading and WITHOUT signs of glue residue, which is commonly found on many peeled "Butchers". Capitol RIAA# 5 on back cover. Our pics of the front appear to show the top right corner rounded off or slightly missing, but it is only an odd lighting /shadowing effect that was strangely difficult not to photograph as such. The corner is lightly worn, but fully intact.

A note about 3rd state butcher covers and further details regarding our item:
When considering purchasing a 3rd state “butcher” cover, buyers are most often concerned with the success of the peel and the final appearance of the front slick.
Many 3rd states butchers offered today on ebay appear to be clumsily peeled with only a moderately successful outcome. These are commonly offered with, at best, residual parts of the trunk cover remaining (that are impossible to remove without damaging the soft butcher slick underneath); or at worst, small to large portions of the actual butcher removed, discolored or damaged.
Even in so-called “professional” peels, there is usually a degree of small tears and tiny lift-ups that can be seen upon close inspection (more easily evident when held at a certain angle and exposed to bright light). These are often adroitly touched-up to a fairly successful degree and upon casual inspection are not noticeable, but nearly all of them have it to some extent (even the ones that proclaim to be a perfect peel job).
It is the degree of success of the peel coupled with the condition of the rest of the cover that dictates prices in the hundreds versus prices in the thousands. A 3rd state described as a perfect peel job with unworn seems/spine and a super clean back is easily going to command top dollar and deservedly so. But since so often buyers choose to frame these, a good portion of that value is unobservable and wasted.
Since the front cover condition is truly paramount (especially for display purposes), we felt it was essential to mention this in regards to our item.
While this item is not a pristine archive-condition piece, it does display beautifully and would be a perfect example to frame. The most key here is the actual butcher slick itself. While it does have the typical touch ups found on most these, they are only observable upon close scrutiny. Overall, its color, sharpness and clarity is quite outstanding. Also because it is an L.A. #5 pressing the color on this is the richer, gray-banner variation which exhibits truer color than the oddly purple-tainted variation that is often seen.
The con on this is the seams, spine and back condition are only about fair at best.
It appears that the seams and spine were all split to some degree and there is small amount of tape and tape residue seen on back. The seams and spine also appear to have been glue-repaired and then touched-up. From the front this is not particularly noticeable, but observing from the side, it is obviously apparent. The back is stained just a tad below average from what is commonly found and has a wavy quality (most likely from the steam removal of the trunk) that is somewhat more pronounced than on the front.
So in closing, if you are looking for an all-around near perfect archive-condition butcher cover, this would not be for you. But if you are looking for a beautifully presentable original STEREO butcher to frame, that will not set you back a couple of thousand, this would be a perfect alternative.
