The one Beatles Lp that really missed the plot. Recorded for release in 1968, before the white album, and in fact never made it until way after the White Album was released.

All of the sleeve notes in fcat refer to the white album, and to be brutally honest the 6 tracks from side one really out to have been on the white album, as it is clear listening to this Lp that the musical style is exactly the same.

Not surprising therefore that the LP failed to hit the UK number 1 slot, and didn't sell in anywhere near the quantiites of other Beatles recordings.

The year being 1969 virtually all recorded material was being purchased in Stereo. This was the last Beatles original recording that came out both in Mono and Stereo. As you might imagine the Mono copies sold far fewer than the Stereo ones, so are even rarer to find

Laminated Front surface, and non laminated rear. A genuine original firts press sleeev which can be spotted by the fact that the rear surface has two red lines accross the middle. reissues did not have this identifier.

The front surface is clean and tidy. There is a laminate crease at the bottom of the sleeve, this can be seen in the picture. Also a few light lines near the spine. The spine is perfectly legible. The rear surface has flip backs which are in excellent condition, and whilst it is true to say the white surface displays some browning near the opening edge, and some finger marks, it is still a very nice sleeve. Many of these very flimsy sleeves have suffered tearing and terrible laminate creases. It is very very hard to find a pristine original 1st press sleeve.

Does have the original black inner sleeve, Flat but does have a couple of rips near the hole. Straight lines , and therefore repairable

I am happy to grade this one VG+.

The Labels

Standard dark green Apple labels in top condition. There is no spindle hole wear, and only a few light spider lines to show that the LP has had approx 10-15 plays.

The Vinyl

Really nice example. Certainly most of these you find are covered in a surface of marks and scratches, and whilst this is not mint, it does retain most of the original sheen.There are a couple of visible handling marks which do not sound out when playing. Under intense illumination you are also able to spot some fine hairlines

The Sound

The three tests I always run on any LP I list should give the buyer a great insight into the reproduction of the record.

Distortion Test:

Pushing the volume up when playing any LP will tell you a lot about the use the LP has had. For example it will show immediately if the groove has suffered any wear through having been subjected to a worn or damaged stylus, or indeed one that was too heavy and caused wear. many people confuse background noise from scratches, and lines with distortion from groove wear. they are very different, and in my opinion I can put up with the odd bit of crackle or light pop, but the sound of a worn record is unacceptable to me. The loud volume ensures that all this is detected because the vibration of the stylus is more pronounced at higher volumes.

Production Test:

Not so much of a test, but a report on the quality of the recording and the clarity of the sound

It is in fact on side 2 where the Beautiful Mono sound is at its best. The George Martin Orchestra performing music from the soundtrack, and it is very very smooth, and clear. This could have been an audio disater, but due to the fabulous production and mix, this orchestral side is just stunning

Unwanted Noise Test:

This concentrates on the noise in the run in groove, the linking groove between the tracks, background crackle, hisses, and pops. I wont mention jumps or sticking as I wouldn't list a record that did either. This is what you can expect to hear on your system, and along with the distortion test form the basis of my overall sound grading.

Near silent run in groove and then you are into The Title track. Crisp and clear undistorted vocals, and a scratch free recording. yes there are one or two light pops here and there, and the odd bit of background, but no worse that a little static sound in places. The linking grooves are also near silent, making this a fine example of this sought after LP.

Side two has a few more pops than on side one, and a tiny wee bit of background, but nowhere near enough to spoil this great sound.
