LISTED AS #10 IN ROLLING STONE The 500 Greatest Albums Of All Time
"Beyond its stylish minimalism, the stark white cover of The Beatles, better known as the White Album, served a symbolic purpose. For the first time, the Beatles couldn't put a picture of themselves on the cover--because they were falling apart as a team. By 1968, John Lennon, Paul McCartney and George Harrison were all working separately as song writers, each one singing his own songs solo while the rest of the band played backup. Yet the creative vision that went into the White Album resulted in one of the most intense and adventurous rock albums ever made...They wrote the songs while on retreat with the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi in India, taking a break from the celebrity whirl. As Lennon later said, 'We sat in the mountains eating lousy vegetarian food and writing all these songs.' They came back with more great tunes than they could release, and competed fiercely during the sessions...But even at each other's throats, they were spurring each other on to new musical heights. 'I think it was a very good album,'said McCartney. 'It stood up, but it wasn't a pleasant one to make.'"Levy, Joe ed. Rolling Stone: The 500 Greatest Albums Of All Time. New York: Wenner Books, 2005.
LISTED IN 1001ALBUMS YOU MUST HEAR BEFORE YOU DIE
"The Beatles officially broke up in 1970, but the Fab Four had stopped functioning as a true band previously. The process started as early as Rubber Soul and picked up steam as John, Paul, George, and Ringo were pulled in different directions by creative differences, religious philosophies, drugs, and most famously, the presence of Yoko One. Amid band squabbling,The Beatles produced The Beatles, an epic masterpiece that equals Sgt. Pepper...,though its artistic success stems more from the talents and personalities of the band members than from collaboration. ...Lennon and McCartney--by now a songwriting team in name only--produced some of their most lasting work with 'Blackbird' and 'Revolution 1,' while Lennon's surreal 'Happiness Is A Warm Gun' is a mini song suite in itself. However, it is Harrison's 'While My Guitar Gently Weeps' that truly stands out. A mishmash then. One that sold two million copies during its first week in the United States alone.Jim Harrington".
