CONDITION SLEEVE: VG+, Gatefold with ‘THE BEATLES’ deeply embossed to front, fully laminated, first issue, top opening, Garrod & Lofthouse sleeve, spine lettering is all clear and readable; 1 ½” scratch to rear sleeve lower middle right
PLEASE NOTE: THIS SLEEVE IS NUMBERED AN UNBELIEVABLE 0002196
(I have never seen an earlier one in 40 years of collecting!!)
This includes the poster 22 ½” x 33 ¾”, free from tears & writing or pin holes, has one small ¾” split, no stains or rips just light creasing consistent with its’ age: to the reverse are printed the lyrics to the songs
This includes the Original set of iconic photographs taken by John Kelly during the autumn of 1968: these are the Original photos with paper sheet cover as issued which appear to be printed on slightly heavier card than subsequent re-issues, and also show greater definition and colour contrast being from such an early Original print run
ALSO NOTE: CURIOUSLY THE BACK OF THIS GATEFOLD SLEEVE HAS ‘TR6’ IMPRESSED IN BOLD SQUARISH LETTERING, TOTAL LENGTH 6” x 1 ¼”: THIS IS CENTRED ON THE BACK OF THE SLEEVE AND THE LETTERING IS IN OUTLINE.
I AM CERTAIN THAT HAD THIS BEEN CAUSED AT ANY TIME BY THE SLEEVE BEING PRESSED AGAINST ANOTHER ALBUM OR BOOK THIS WOULD HAVE LEFT AN IMPRESSION IN REVERSE, NOT THE CORRECT WAY ROUND AS THIS IS.

I AM MYSTIFIED AS THIS APPEARS TO HAVE BEEN DELIBERATELY STAMPED AND IMPRESSED IN A SIMILAR WAY TO THE WORDS ‘THE BEATLES’ ON THE FRONT IN A SIMILAR (BUT MUCH LARGER SANS SERIF FONT)
ONE THEORY is some tracks off this album were recorded at Trident studios, London: does the ‘TR’ stand for Trident?
The Beatles were at Trident Studios for a 6-day period from Tuesday 1st October – during which they recorded ‘Honey Pie’, ‘Dear Prudence’, ‘Savoy Truffle’ & ‘Martha My Dear’
(The TR6 sports car was incidentally launched around this time in November 1968: I don’t know if this was reported in advance)
(This unusually is the only sleeve of a Beatles studio album not to show the members of the band on the front)
