Please be aware that all records are VISUALLY graded only - all grades are given based on how they appear under my desk lamp - since I do not own a record player. I cannot guarantee that discs will be click and skip free, although any marks and scratches that might possibly cause such problems will be highlighted clearly in the description.

2ND STATE BUTCHER COVER!
This listing is one of the true Holy Grail's of Beatles collecting! This is your chance to pick up something that no Beatles collection should be without!
On offer here is a 100% authentic 1966 mono 2nd State Butcher Cover press of the Beatles US LP 'Yesterday and Today'! The Beatles Butcher covers are one of the most desireable, most highly prized and collectible Beatles albums (or indeed any album) out there both due to its rarity and its incredible backstory!
In 1966 the Beatles were attending a photoshoot with Robert Whittaker for the album cover of their forthcoming American album 'Yesterday and Today'. Pretty soon it became obvious that the group were getting bored of doing 'yet another Beatle thing' so, to lighten the mood, break the boredom and just have some fun, Robert dug out some macabre props. He dressed the group up in white butcher's smocks and draped them with meat and baby dolls and took a run of stills with his camera. Unfortunately nobody told Capitol that these photos were never intended to be considered and soon picked one of the 'Butcher' shots to use on their forthcoming album.
Reaction from radio stations and record stores was, expectedly, very negative. Capitol immediately issued a recall letter (a modern copy of which is included with this album) and got back as many copies as they could find. After an initial session of destroying these covers and burying them in landfills it was decided that a much more cost effective solution would be to just paste the new album design slick on top.
The 'Butcher Cover' can be found in three 'states'. A 1st state is where a copy managed to slip through the huge recall process and survived intact. A 2nd state is where the new 'trunk' slick is still stuck on top of the Butcher cover and a 3rd state is where someone has peeled off the Trunk slick to reveal the Butcher underneath (with varying degrees of success).
This listing is for a 2nd state where the Trunk slick is still glued tightly over the top of the Butcher slick. If you look at the photos below I have included a close up that has had its brightness and gamma enhanced to clearly show Ringo hiding underneath.
Since 1966 fans have been peeling their Butcher covers and, today, the number of 3rd states out there now outnumber 2nd states. The 2nd States were only ever available in very strictly limited numbers and 51 years of people peeling them now means that Butcher Covers are now harder to find unpeeled than peeled. This trend will no doubt continue and 2nd state Butcher Covers will always be decreasing in numbers.

Title Yesterday and Today Year of Release 1966 Catalogue Number T 2553 Label Black Capitol with Rainbow Perimeter Tax Code on Disc - Sleeve Manufacturer 6 (Los Angeles, California) Side 1 Matrix Number T-1-2553-G-22 Side 2 Matrix Number T-2-2553-F-23 Side 1 Stampers - Side 2 Stampers - Cover Condition The cover is in VG+ condition. It's holding up fine with just your usual wear and tear. The front is nice and clean with just a very light hint of ingwear and some very light stains - mostly around the edges. Ringo is surprisingly clear through the Trunk slick - the Trunk slick as a whole completely untouched with no splits or lifting (bar a very tiny little knock just under Paul) which means that the Butcher slick underneath is completely intact! Top and bottom seams are showing a little wear but have not split. The spine is holding and legible, although the very bottom has some wear through to the card (see the image below to see this). The back cover is clean with a little browning around the edges. There's some light ringwear and small pencil marks next to some of the song titles. Overall, a little worn but looking really nice!! Inner Sleeve Condition The original orange inner sleeve is in G condition. It's looking okay with a small crease in one corner The top has frayed and worn a little and the bottom seam has split about 5 or so inches in the middle. The side seams are holding fine. Inserts Condition - Disc Condition The disc is in EX- condition. I wish I could grade this higher as, predominantly, the disc looks exceptional with a sharp, clean shine to it and looking barely played. However, there are some light surface marks and scratches on both sides that, although noticeable, I suspect may be cosmetic - as I don't own a record player though I cannot test this. Label Condition The labels are in M- condition. The labels look like they have never been near a record player! No marks, no wear, no writing, and no visible spindlewear or whitening around the centrehole. Stellar labels!
All records have been visually graded under a strong, 125W natural light desk lamp.
