“SAVAGE YOUNG BEATLES” 1961 LP w/ PETE BEST (NO RINGO!)
Recorded in 1961 in Hamburg, Germany, I purchased this album in 1965 as a starry-eyed Beatle fan. But after reading the back cover and finding out that this was put out on Savage Records by Pete Best, the drummer replaced by Ringo Starr, I refused to play it. (Ah, the loyalties of youth!) As a result, the disc itself has never been played and is in pristine condition.
Anyway, this is how the back cover reads:
“These are actual recordings made by the Beatles in Hamburg in 1961 with Peter Best and T. Sheridan. Peter was a Beatle for the first 2 and a half years and went through thick and thin with the group . . . only to be fired because of personal jealousies on the eve of the Beatles making their fortune. Posterity records Peter Best as the Fallen Idol . . . or the man who lost $25,000,000. These excellent recordings show how Peter Best’s fine drum work along with his singing with the Beatles.”
So you can see how a loyal fan would react. However, I have carried this around with me for forty years. As a result, the album sleeve is a bit battered, with age-old tape along two sides of the album cover. On the front cover is a 1961 photo of the Beatles with Pete Best on drums, John, Paul and George holding guitars, all dressed in black leather. Very macho!

It’s a rather primitive attempt (the packaging and selling) by Pete Best to cash in on the Beatles fame, the titles on the cover not exactly matching the titles on the label. (For example, on the cover it’s “If You Love Me,” and “Baby What I Say.” On the record label it says “If You Love Me Baby,” and “What I Say.” Ouch.
Anyway, it’s a real collector’s item, but I can’t attest to its mono quality as I’ve never heard it. It's also extremely rare, and I've not yet been able to find a copy on eBay. Or anywhere else for that matter. But they've got to be copies out there, don't you think? Or were so few sold or sold and tossd out or lost over the years that it's even more rare than I thought? Who knows.
