Description
Two absolutely superb condition examples of The Beatles "Please Please Me" and "With The Beatles" - the original UK EMI reel to reel versions released at the same time as the vinyl albums in 1963. I have no hesitation in describing their conditions as mint minus. The original first ever, and original second album by The Beatles on open reel tape, from March and October,1963.
It is clear from first sight that these gems have barely seen the light of day, let alone a tape recorder. The lids and bases are spotless with no marks, stains or writing, the spools are sparkling clean and intact, the small green and gold Parlophone logo stickers still affixed, the clearly printed white lead and red trailing leader tapes, and the original enclosed "Emitape" leaflets and packing slips like new. Even the tape retaining clips are present. Please see all photographs.
Played and tested for what could have been the first time by myself(?) - and perfect.
I have always been of the assumption that Beatles tape reels came on 4 inch spools in a white card inlay (except for the White Album).but after finding these gems in their overall superb condition, I am not so sure..... The whole packages with the 5 inch spools look so together, authentic and "as one" that opinion is that these examples were released as is. It is easy to imagine, at a period of such large ,fast and sudden demand for The Beatles music in 1963, a production foreman running out of the smaller reels or white card inlays that housed them, and instructing the use of the larger spools. However for purists I am happy to rewind onto 4 inch spools if requested.
For those interested in only one of these superb condition rare Beatles reel to reel gems ( perhaps you already have the other?) I am happy to split this double lot. However, given their rare mint minus status, advice is to buy both whilst they are available - and keep in this condition.
One of the pleasures of listening to Beatles open reel albums, (apart from owning the much rarer, appreciating format), is hearing them "pop, crackle, hiss and jump-free", which is the usual case with the vinyl format. Audio heaven.
I am now of a "certain age" where I may not benefit from the ever and steady increasing value of near-mint Beatles gems, so it is with a sense of realism that I offer these two exceptional condition items at a sensible price. To whoever may purchase them, I advise keeping them. The buyer will not be disappointed.
Beatles reel to reel tapes were rare purchases in comparison to the vinyl LP in the 1960s, usually by discriminating audiophiles wanting top quality sound. These were usually bought by special order from the retailer and gives you some idea of how rare they were in comparison to the vinyl LP.
Note: Glorious twin track mono can be played on four track stereo tape recorders
