Description
Here is a rare example of a true first UK pressing of The Beatles' historic debut LP, Please Please Me, on the black and gold Parlophone label from 1963 with very first issue Dick James publishing credits. Although this is far from a brilliant mono copy it nevertheless plays all the way through, both sides, without skips or jumps. The first press front laminated flipback sleeve made by E J Day & Co has the Angus McBean photo credit to the far right of the bottom of the front sleeve. There is light creasing here and there, all corner wear, slight damage to the bottom flipback, a small spot of laminate loss, a patch of staining and rubbing towards the top of the rear panel together with a fan's handwritten name and address at the bottom. Both black and gold labels feature the very first press Dick James publishing credits, while the matrices are 1N/1N and the mother stampers are 1 - GA/1 - GA, denoting a very early copy indeed. The labels remain presentable and fully readable, with no writing or sticker tears, and very few signs of spindle marks or wear around the spindle hole. But both sides of the vinyl have numerous surface marks, and in particular there is one nasty looking graze on side two (see photos) which spans several tracks. However, playback is far better than you might imagine, with no skips or jumps but plentiful little ticks and clicks plus background noise at various points. So this is a far from perfect example of this historic pressing but nevertheless a perfectly playable copy. Good luck if you are bidding.
