1969 UK Apple PMC 7070 'Yellow Submarine', mono with red lines above and below the sleeve notes denoting a first pressing, reinforced by the XEX 715- 1 and XEX 716 - 1 matrices for sides 1 & 2 respectively in the dead wax run-offs. As an aside, the sleeve notes are a review by Tony Palmer of the 'White Album' (officially released shortly before) and which is rather a quaint touch I think.
Both the front and flipbacks of the sleeve are laminated hence the spine is protected also. And the sleeve is in particularly nice shape with sharp corners. Overall it feels clean and fresh in the hands which is going some for a 50 year old example. And usually these 'plain' backs acquire grubbiness over the years but this one is remarkably clean. No rips, tears or writing to report. Blemishes include creasing of the laminate due to shrinkage over the years and a hint of wear at the mouth but that's the worse I can say about it really. As such I rate it 8.5 /10 for condition.
The vinyl at 138g is flat and shiny. Nice clean labels with tight holes showing evidence of a handful of spins only. In room daylight it looks clean yet angling it under the evil and all-knowing table lamp I see some scuffs and light hairlines.
I don't normally have time to playtest records but I've made an exception in this case. On my Linn / Naim hi-fi system the sound quality is good; yes with some pops etc. obvious between the tracks but otherwise nothing untowards noticeable to my ears. And I'd forgotten how on a few tracks the boys tear it up with backwards guitar, reverb etc. so great stuff.
In summary therefore I rate the vinyl 7.5 /10 visually and 8.5 /10 aurally. Should you disagree with my subjective assessments then of course no problem to return.
