The Beatles 1964 UK Parlophone PMC 1240 Mono LP 'Beatles For Sale'.
This copy has all the credentials for a 1964 first pressing viz: 'The Parlophone Co. Ltd.' and 'Sold in U.K.' label texts with inner flipbacks on the gatefold sleeve plus an outline 'mono' on the front. And weren't later pressings all stereo with a different catalogue number? Yet the matrices XEX 503-4N and XEX 504-3N in the dead wax run-offs for sides 1 and 2 respectively maybe indicate a later 'issue' within the first pressing run? I'm no expert but whatever, its' early!
The gatefold sleeve has a laminated outer and plain inner. All pretty solid and clean yet with blemishes including corners' creasing, outline ringwear on the back and a small ding type tear on the front bottom. So with that in mind I'm rating the sleeve 7.5 /10 for condition.
For the Emitex poly-lined inner sleeve, it's strong, intact and in crisp condition. In other words clean with the ubiquitous creases. Great example for its' age.
At 156g on the scale the shiny and flat vinyl has a good weight with clean labels showing several plays on a turntable as denoted by the spindle 'spider' traces at the hole.
At the window I'm inspecting the disc in room daylight and it looks very clean. Beneath the critical table lamp I can't see much further wrong with it, maybe some light scuffs etc. due to 'storage' over the years. So with regard to visual condition I'm tempted to give it 9 but let's say 8.75 /10 to err on the safe side and to avoid the risk of over egging the condition.
Next, on to the Linn / Naim hi-fi for a sound check. Boy, this LP plays sweet. Very little surface noise and mostly quiet on the dead bands between the tracks. I'm listening out for crackles, pops, skips and other nasties but I'm struggling to hear much of any so I'm going for a confident 9 /10 regarding audio quality.
If you think I'm a complete prune and disagree with my subjective appraisals then no problem to return of course.
