Description
Very rare original copy of The Beach Boys' first single, Surfin b/w Luau, on the X Records label, releases in December, 1961. This was the second and rarest pressing, said to have been funded by father Murray Wilson, and sold out of the back of his car in Venice and Malibu Beach. Very small pressing, and perhaps the rarest Beach Boys record of all.
Side A by Brian Wilson and Mike Love, side B written by Hite Morgan, who also produced. The 1st issue was Candix 331, released in November of 1961. This was followed quickly by the X label issue in December '61, then subsequently by the "Candix 301" issue in early '62, and the "Candix 301 dist. by ERA Records" issue. Only later did they sign with Capitol and go on to big stardom.
One source says: "The Beach Boys first song, published under the Beach Boys name, was Surfin on the Candix label which was supposedly never for Era distribution. The "X" label was acually distributed at Venice Beach, Ca. by father Murray Wilson, indicating an "unofficial" second press, or more accurately a "bootleg" of the original."
And another says: "Their first album, Surfin Safari, includes some of the demo recordings that got the band signed in the first place, and their first single, Surfin', from 1961, which had first been released on the tiny X Records label and then on Candix. So maybe Candix is the bootleg!"
Condition - VG+. Plays loud and clear with no pops or skips, though with a touch of background noise, which is mostly only audible in quiet parts. The music is clear and loud and mostly drowns it out. Great copy. Small label sticker on each side (see photos). Send me a message and I will arrange to play it for you over the phone if you want!
