Label/Format: Capitol – original Capitol ‘Rainbow rim’ format with flat matt finish. With close examination, these look very slightly textured.

Label Conditions: Both look fantastic: very clean, super fresh and highly attractive with only three or four fine and light spindle marks. The total lack of fingermarks to the matt and highly revealing surfaces is unusual to say the least. Once handling marks are applied to such surfaces, they are near impossible to remove. It will be immediately apparent to any winning bidder these labels have rarely been touched and I am certain this record has not seen light of day for decades. Please remember the great age of this evergreen classic and popular title, finding such clean and lightly played copies is immensely difficult.

Rarity: Original stereo copies are much rarer than the mono versions that was still the mode of choice back in 1966 with fewer people owning stereo equipment at this time. The earliest examples that still play with practically flawless sound are at a premium and this copy plays beautifully.

Brief Info: Issued in 1966, this masterpiece of popular music peaked at No 2 in the UK album charts and No 10 in the US. Rated by many critics and the record buying public as the greatest album ever issued, certainly in the ‘pop music’ genre, this album must rank as Brian Wilson’s greatest ever achievement. Including a host of session musicians, every song on this album works perfectly and has more than stood the test of time, it remains one of the most influencial albums ever issued. The tracks have immense beauty and are superbly arranged and produced with magnificently lush orchestral parts and vocal harmonies – this is simply a perfect pop record with Wilson at his creative peak – this was his crowning achievement. This copy on offer is the much rarer original UK stereo version, far harder to find than the mono cut and a very fine copy it is too. Both record and cover are in super condition, the record clearly has avoided any traumas from the vintage equipment of day and plays beautifully with nothing to fault, a brave statement I know, but true. This too on a highly revealing system as can be seen further down. The cover has minor blemishes but at this age, I think it’s earned the right to. An album of genius and as essential as any record ever could be, most collectors will enjoy this legendary and landmark recording.

Cover Grade and Format: EX+. A single format with a laminated front. This covers all the closed edges and ends on three large external rear flipbacks. This is the correct stereo cover with the ST number and stereo logo printed on the back. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse Ltd and including the ‘Patents pending’ text. The original promotional inner is also included that has ‘Patents applied for’ text, this too in superb condition and guaranteed original.

Lamination & Front: I will mention the only relatively minor blemish first: a pressmark near the left edge just below halfway, this has not cracked the laminate, thus the artwork is totally unaffected. Any others are minor indeed and all will be mentioned of course. The laminate is very clean, fresh, shiny and clear and all is fully adhered with no lifting or blisters, always great news for maximum viewing pleasure. Just one crease of real note, a light surface one on the bottom edge, any others are tiny, few and faint. The vintage immensely famous artwork is incredibly richly coloured and totally unaged and note the word ‘stereo’ near the top right corner, the majority of ‘rainbows’ are mono. The bottom right corner tip has a tiny crease, the other are all ultra neat. Even under light, there is little evidence of any friction rubs or dulling and any traces around the record’s rim shape are very light indeed and any marks, bar the one pressmark mentioned already, are few and ultra fine and faint. This true classic cover front will prove very difficult to find much better.

Cover Back: The back is generally clean with any set-off, marks or grubbiness being ultra light and minimal. It has avoided ringwear and is is pretty much crease-free bar a tiny ultra faint hairlines on the flipbacks which barely even will ever avoid at the very least. There are four or five very faint toned spot areas near the right edge, they are truly very light and quite faint. The flipbacks are in splendid condition and have barely aged at all, all remain grime-free and still very solid and attractive, and unusually, a rich shade of real white, not yellow. No burring to their ends whatsoever, all crisp and sharp. The G&L imprint is perfect on the bottom one and protected by the pristine clear laminate. Given all the facts, age and vulnerability, this back is very strong indeed with any hints of age being modest and light.

Top Edge: Unworn, and even here the laminate is shiny.

Bottom Edge: As above.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp with no wear or feathering, not the absolute cleanest of manufacturing cuts if being critical, this I have found on most-all of these early-made covers. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: A very attractive looking spine also. Solid, straight with barely any compression. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and unpeeled laminate. This remains very white with no toning, just one ultra faint hairline crack that can just be felt with the fingertip.

Corners: All neat with little wear. The bottom right front has a small tip crease but anything else is barely worthy of mention. Very fine to excellent shape is retained.

Cover Summary: A very strong all round example of this highly famous, prized and scarcer stereo 60’s cover, one that will prove difficult to find much better. This beautiful item should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner: Mint(-), the minus being merely tiny and faint glue darkening on the seams which is considered by most to be totally natural ageing. This one is the black and white EMI promotional inner and guaranteed the one purchased with this record. I rarely ever mix-and-match, I prefer to offer the original item with anything I offer if at all possible. This matches the rest of the set and is in superb condition. Clean, fresh, devoid of any noteworthy creases and highly attractive. Unlined with unsplit edges, these are hard to find this clean and please remember just how old this set is.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: Critically graded EX++. A very fine visual copy that is super clean, shiny, intense black and very solidly pressed. Any marks are ultra fine and faint surface traces or super-fine hairlines, merely superficial removal blemishes only. How many copies of this title or similar aged albums will not have light surface trace marks as the very least? This was a popular album in the UK and most examples got played very heavily and a high percentage these days will be rendered unlistenable by over-use or abuse from those times. This copy looks hardly even played on all the evidence reitterated by supreme sound quality. Visually a super record that should please most-all collectors.

I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This undisputed masterpiece plays even above its high visual grading with nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is fantastic with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds barely even registered and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing for a technically complex album. Few original rainbow format copies will outperform this vintage pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played only very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled. Owned from new by one man who owned quality stereo equipment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record and the fine details and stereo imagery will never be bettered by the more ‘modern’ formats. This copy will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be highly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
