THE BEACH BOYS TODAY:

One of the classic Beach Boys album from the peak of their career, this was the Beach Boys sixth LP for Capitol. It heralded the imminent arrival of "Pet Sounds", their next album, their new sound and a whole new force in music to be reckoned with… when they recorded this album, Beach Boys were, well - just that - a bunch of adolescents, but the music, though not exactly serious.is played with a sense of maturity and ambition, The album includes a few of their biggest early hits, such as Help me R(h)onda, Dance, dance, dance, When I grow up (to be a man) and many, many other.Classic Beach Boys album, not to be missed. Track listing: Please let me wonder - Good to my baby - Dance, dance, dance - When I grow up (to be a man) - She knows me too well - Help me Ronda - Kiss me,baby - Do you wanna dance - Don't hurt my little sister - I'm so young - Kiss me baby - In the back of my mind - Bull session with the "Big Daddy".

SUMMER DAYS (AND SUMMER NIGHTS)

Summer Days (And Summer Nights!!) was a bit of a regression from the success of Today!, lapsing back into that distressing division between first-rate cuts and lightweight also-rans that characterized their pre-1965 albums. The difference is that the very best tracks were operating on a more sophisticated level than the 1962-1964 classics. "Help Me, Rhonda" was a number one single and would be their last Top 40 exercise in sheer fun for a while. More impressive was "California Girls," with its symphonic arrangement, glorious harmonies, and archetypal statement of Californian lifestyle. Subpar efforts like "Amusement Park U.S.A." and "Salt Lake City," throwbacks to the empty-headed summer filler of previous days, will disappoint. The answer song, "The Girl from New York City," and the cover, "Then I Kissed Her," are well done but don't break new ground. Yet a couple of cuts are among their most essential LP-only efforts. "Let Him Run Wild" is a soulful ballad with a great Brian Wilson falsetto vocal. "Girl Don't Tell Me," with its gorgeous melody, fine lead vocal debut from Carl Wilson, and subtle depiction of romantic rejection and disappointment, may be the best obscure pre-Pet Sounds Beach Boys track.

PET SOUNDS

Need we say more? One of top-five albums on anyone-and-everyone's want list, here is the Beach Boys's regal masterpiece in all its original (mono) glory. The sound of the original mono LP will leave you salivating;  Brian Wilson's "Teenage ode to God" aged with such immaculate, spiritual grace, that many people put it right up there in the Pantheon of Classical music, along the masterworks by Beethoven and Mozart. No wonder. It is an album of fine, delicate, almost nocturnal vibes, accessible only to deeply hurt (or loving) souls. On Pet Sounds, minor key reigns supreme from start to finish.

When Capitol records issued this masterpiece in 1966, they did a remarkably idiotic, bird-brained, retarded (we are being charitable on Capitol here) decision to issue relatively small number of copies of this album altogether (despite the fact that Beach Boys were, along the Beatles, their biggest selling act) presumably because they had misgivings about the commercial appeal of the album, and could not immediately identify any obvious hit-singles on it to warrant their enthusiasm (the album  would ultimately yield no less than four top-50 singles (alas, no top-10 chartbusters), including "God only Knows", the songs many believe to be the single finest ballad in the history of Rock). In an awkward case of self-fulfilled prophecy, the album did, in fact, initially turn out to be a commercial flop and for many years remained the worst seller of all classic BB albums. In the intervening years this has, of course, changed considerably and the sales have picked up to reflect the status of the "Classic" bestowed on this Giant album by all-knowing critics (eeeek!) and public alike.

Of those few copies even smaller number of copies were pressed in mono, while the remaining copies were pressed in a hideous, fake "electronic" stereo (no true stereo version of this album existed until the 1999  reissue);   As a result of the unusual combination of simultaneous dwindling market supply and ferociously escalating demand,  mono copies of this album have become major, major collectible rarities in recent years. This is only about the sixth copy we have encountered in as many years. And, take our word, we've been looking high and low.

For its extraordinary contribution to the modern music, superb production, craftsmanship, fine musicianship, revolutionary significance and influence it exerted on numerous generations of musicians, writers and general public, or for some other innate quality, this album was voted one of top-200 albums of all time in one of the largest poll of critics, music reviewers, professionals and producers ever organized: the poll, which was conducted by Paul Gambaccini, legendary BBC Radio A&R man, surveyed more than 50 top music professionals (including Roy Carr, Jonathan Cott, Robert Christgau, Cameron Crowe, Chet Flippo, Ben Fong-Torres, Charlie Gillett, Greil Marcus, Murray the K., Lenny Kaye , Bruce Morrow (a/k/a "Cousin Brucie"), Tim Rice (of "Jesus Christ Superstar" and "Evita" fame), Lisa Robinson, Robert Shelton (who wrote liner notes for Bob Dylan's first album), Ed Ward, Joel Whitburn, Pete Wingfield, etc.). For more details, see: "Critics Choice: Top-200 albums" compiled by Paul Gambaccini, Omnibus Press, Library of Congress Catalog No.7855565 (or ►click here  for the complete album listing)

Reflecting the historical importance of this album, as well as its popular and critical acclaim, The Rolling Stone Magazine selected this album as on of the top-200 Rock albums of all time in their recent global poll. (►click here for more details).

·       CONDITION:

·       RECORD

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          THIS LP BOX SET IS STILL FACTORY SEALED AND IS BELIEVED TO BE PERFECTLY MINT. Please note: sealed items are assumed to be mint and are sold as-is, as we have no way of inspecting them. For our policy on still sealed records ►click here (PLEASE READ BEFORE PLACING A BID).

(b)            The records (based on the weight) are  apparently pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)           True stereo pressings of this box set do not exist. This is an electronically rechannelled stereo recording.

(d)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!
