This is the third ABC Paramount platter from B.B. King, following on the heels of the genre-defining Live at the Regal (1964). The artist's vocal delivery and signature fretwork are uniformly strong, although at times the material feels as if it isn't completely suited to the artist. While not an overt "concept" album, Confessin' the Blues (1965) consists of a dozen selections with King supported by his concurrent road band: Duke Jethro (piano), Leo Lauchie (bass), and Sonny Freeman (drums). If, as has been suggested, the idea was to groom King into being a Ray Charles protégé, these initial attempts provide varying degrees of success. During the opener -- an update of the standard "See See Rider" -- King is constricted by the compact and rigid arrangement. Conversely, "Do You Call That a Buddy" allows more of his unique intimacy to seep into the grooves. The robust horn section occasionally overpowers or -- perhaps more accurately -- interferes with what are otherwise textbook examples of King's unquestionable mastery of the assembled vintage rhythm & blues entries. One of the more glaring occurrences can be heard on the overhaul of Jay McShann's memorable title track "Confessin' the Blues." Listeners are drawn into King's understated narrative, only to then be blasted by the brass' bright and brash contributions. Thankfully, such instances are the exception and not the rule as demonstrated on the definitive renditions of "I'm Gonna Move to the Outskirts of Town," "How Long, How Long Blues," and the absolutely essential interpretations of Big Joe Turner's "Cherry Red" and "Wee Baby Blues." Confessin' the Blues wraps up with an incongruous, but nonetheless spectacularly stylish take of Percy Mayfield's "Please Send Me Someone to Love." King takes hold of a big band -- presumably recorded at an all-together different session -- with the command and authority that would be his trademark for decades to come. In that context, the tune is prophetic, as his predilection for big-band blues has certainly served King well during the ensuing decades.

·       THE RECORD

 (IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS STRONG VG++, JUST A NOTCH BELOW NEAR MINT. A few light abrasions (probably just sleeve scuffs inflicted in storage over the years) ARE VISIBLE, but they appear fairly  insignificant relative to the overall condition of the vinyl, and are only moderately visually distracting. For most part, the vinyl looks impeccable, without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record comes in the original stock inner sleeve.

(c)           The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(d)          Stereo  pressing of this title is much rarer, and by far more preferable to its mono  counterpart. The mix is more graphic, the sound resolution more precise, and the channel separation (which does not exist on mono version) adds a whole new dimension to the music. Also, the stereo mixes are (by definition) somewhat different than on the mono version. We estimate that mono copies of this album outnumber stereo copies  by a ratio of at least 3:1.

(e)           Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·                               THE COVER

THE COVER IS ABOUT VERY GOOD+(+)

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        Cover has some ring wear.  On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 5  (front side) and 4 (back side).

-        Back cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record),  probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.

-        Cover has a partially split bottom seam (between 1 and 2 inches  / 2.5 to 5 centimeters)

-        Cover has some fraying/wear along the lower seam

-        Minor shelf wear noted on the top seam (nothing significant)

-        The cover has a few tiny scratch marks on the front side  (nothing significant)

-        Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine

-        Cover has two corners slightly worn / dinged  / bent.

-        A  small (1/4") tear noted on the paper slick on the back panel (does not affect the cardboard base)
