Description

Bla Bla, Italy, 1973, gatefold. ( Gatefold cover stuck shut for bottom two-thirds area due to water damage. Lp in fairly decent shape. Missing insert).

VG-/ VG+
Gatefold cover stuck shut due to water damage from about two thirds of the way up the cover on down, could probably be opened, with moisture present ( generally by wetting, or steaming it, and pulling it open), though this will almost surely cause some ripping to the cover. Cover looks good from head-on, front and back, with only light creases, bends.
Lp has sleeve lines, some small streaks and scuffs, plays very nicely with only some very light surface noise in spots. Small label damage, quarter-inch by half-inch spot of paper pull-up on side 1. Now an exceptionally scarce and sought-after lp, it is offered here on the strength of the record, its music and rarity.

The legendary second lp from Italian avant-prog keyboardist/ composer Franco Battiato is a fantastic, out-there, melodic, thematic, electronic-tinged, and heavy electric jam-laden monster. Magical tonal color, fuzz guitars, haunting vocals, and mesmerizing sound-collage characterize this moody epic which transcends definition. From symphonic ambiance ( like orchestras warming up at a wedding) overhauled with dubbed effects and voices, to furious, fast paced guitar-and-organ heavy jams, to explosions and other weird transitional effects, into the incredibly surreal "Areknames," featuring bloopy-tone guitars and synths riffing in unison, and then some layered, hypnotic, chanty vocals establishing clever melodic themes, then the bottom drops out and a heavy electric guitar jam version takes over those melodic themes, full of freaked-out, thunderous riffing, And that's only the first three songs. The piano, bass, and space voices/ effects -loaded jam track "Beta," that follows, is sure to appeal to fans of AGITATION FREE, CLEARLIGHT, POPUL VUH and the like, as it has that Eastern ambiance, using some Far East-sounding, almost Indian-raga type scales - this long improvisational track is most impressive in this regard. The first side ends with another wash of trippy sound effects and voices, that take the listener to some plane of being, in some time and place in some Italian villa. The second side of the adventure proceeds in similar style, taking up where side 1 left off. Like late '60s Zappa/ MOTHERS, it's going so many places, and is so advanced for its time, that it is still hard to categorize. Pure genius. Cover art reportedly offended some Catholics there at the time, as it featured Battiato's face on a crucifix. These same folks probably weren't too keen on his previous album, "Fetus," either, which featured a gelatin model of an aborted fetus. Then Battiato gets invited to play multiple concerts at The Vatican. Go figure.
On the ultra-collectible Bla Bla label.
