BASIL KIRCHIN

ABSTRACTIONS OF THE INDUSTRIAL NORTH

TRUNK RECORDS JBH 012LP

Very limited vinyl re-issue of this De Wolfe music library work, first issued in similarly limited quantities in 1966! Issued here

on the collectible Trunk label, it's in superb condition and UNPLAYED!

Basil Kirchin was a drummer and composer who got his first break playing drums in his father, Ivor's band in 1940. After the war, he played with

Harry Roy and Ted Heath before returning to work with his father in 1951. The band continued to enjoy success, with Billy Eckstein and Sarah Vaughan

insisting that the Kirchin Band backed them when they toured Britain. The popularity of big bands was not to last, however, and, by the end of the '50s,

skiffle and rock and roll were the new sounds. In the early '60s Basil began working on experimental pieces, 'soundtracks for unmade films'. He also

produced material for the De Wolfe library using young session musicians like Jimmy Page and Mick Ronson. In 1967, the Arts Council awarded him a

grant to buy a Nagra tape recorder. With this he collected ambient sounds, animal noises from London Zoo and the voices of autistic children. He then

experimented by slowing down the recordings to create 'little boulders of sound'. These experiments were partly financed by composing film music for

'Catch Us If You Can' (1965), 'The Shuttered Room' (1967), 'I Start Counting' (1969) and the cult classic, 'The Abominable Dr Phibes' (1971). Many

musicians have cited Basil Kirchin as an influence, including Brian Eno, Nurse With Wound and Broadcast.

Personnel on the record include: Peter Hughes (penny whistle/flute/saxes), Alan Branscombe (vibes/alto), Chris Karan (drums), Peter McGurk (bass),

Kenny Wheeler (trumpet), Tubby Hayes (sax/flute), Duncan Lamont (flute), Cedric West (guitar), Harry Stoneham (piano/organ). It also includes a

couple of then-session muscians by the names of Jimmy Page and Big Jim Sullivan!

Sleeve: A great, stylised industrial image on the front and sleeve notes on the reverse from Will Hodgekinson and Jonny Trunk. Other than two

small bumps on the open edges, about a quarter of the way down, there is no damage to the sleeve!

Inner Sleeve: Plain white, slightly shaped, glossy paper. Approximately five small, what appear to be, old grease marks on one side. Otherwise undamaged.
