BARNEY WILEN – BARNEY – RCA 430.053 – Rare FRENCH Original Mono Pressing
This fabulous early release of Barney Wilen’s modern jazz LP recording on the French RCA label (catalogue no. 430.053) is rarely available in the UK. Matrix Nos. Side 1: 11R 60M 394 D1 / Side 2: 11R 60M 395 D1. Recorded live in 1959 at The Club Saint-Germain (Paris) featuring Barney Wilen (tenor-sax) with Kenny Dorham (trumpet), Duke Jordan (piano) Paul Rovére (bass), Daniel Humair (drums), playing: Besame Mucho, Stablemates, Jordu, and Lady Bird.
The disc is in fantastic near-mint condition. Side 1 has no visible marks and plays perfectly. Side 2 has a VERY light inaudible smudge mark. If you concentrate very hard on Track 1 you might JUST hear VERY faint background crackles (each only a split second long) on 3 consecutive revolutions – and you probably won’t notice them at all! That’s how good this record is – not quite perfect but pretty close! The immaculate condition of the label indicates minimal playing/handling.
The sleeve is VERY scruffy, with serious edge/corner wear/creasing and laminate lift. On rear is residue of sticky tape repair to bottom flip-back edge – see photo. (It seems to be almost impossible to find one of these thin sleeves in good condition!)
