Description

A couple of weeks ago I went to a remote NSW town and came across a guy who'd been buying prog/folk/psych/blues/R&B LP's for about 40 years. Relentlessly scouring the area. And he'd never sold anything. Except - on that day, he decided to. And he did. And it was thee best collection I'd seen for years. Let's not pretend everything was mint - it's not - but there's some gems in there.

The collection snuck in a few other genres too - like this monstrously rare gem!

=====================================================================

ARTIST:      BAD HABIT
TITLE:        "STORMCHILD"
FORMAT:   …vinyl LP…
LABEL:     privately pressed by the band on EMI CUSTOM RECORDINGS
CATALOGUE #:   YPRX-1424
DATE OF RELEASE:  1977
PRESSED IN:      AUSTRALIA

ORIGINAL FIRST PRESSING?:    Yes, it is...one of the first and only pressing of 300 copies - read on:

Only one copy of this has ever appeared on eBay in the past 13+ years (it sold for $848), and my personal experience of the LP extends only to the two copies I bought from the band's guitarist in about 1991 (when his band at the time was signed to my own label then). At the time I could NOT believe that such an incredible album had stayed under the radar for so long. Initially I was even confused as to who to sell it to, because amongst all the punk tracks, lies a monster 70's prog track, which, to a prog collector, would be almost worth the price alone. Anyway, it's major appeal is to punk collectors, coz that's the focus of pretty much the entire rest of the tracks. It's a great album!"

So!...on offer here is an ultra rare original issue of this amazing LP.  This album along with THE SAINTS debut “I’m Stranded” were the ONLY Queensland-recorded punk 12” LP’s released in the 1970's.  All other Queensland new wave/punk output of that time appeared on either 7” (single/EP) or cassette format.  It is remarkable that “Stormchild” appeared on vinyl at all, considering the difficulties that the group experienced during the recording and mixing of the album, and all on a budget of $600!

Moving on...At the time it appeared on eBay, one of the engineers, and the guitarist sent details of the story of Bad Habit (in cahoots with the lister himself, famed Aussie collector and retainer of way too much intricate knowledge of Aussie obscurities, Matt Gleeson - the guy's a freaking encyclopaedia!), and I'll include it below - it's a great read and should be passed on:---

"NEIL COOMBE (lead guitarist and backing vocalist) formed BAD HABIT in 1975 at age 15, along with fellow members PAUL WILTON (bass guitarist and lead vocalist) and NEAL WARD (drummer).  The group first started playing in IPSWICH (40km south-west of BRISBANE) where they were based, and then started gigging in BRISBANE and elsewhere throughout south-east Queensland and northern New South Wales.  BAD HABIT recorded some demos in early 1976 and supported AC/DC at Festival Hall later in the year (18 December).  Early in 1977, PAUL WILTON left the group and was replaced by STEVE ARTHURSON (lead vocalist and second guitarist) and JOHN PANKOFF (bass guitarist and backing vocalist).  It was this line-up that recorded the album.  The ALL ORIGINAL SONG-WRITING CREDITS were shared between NEIL COOMBE and STEVE ARTHURSON.

The “Stormchild” recording sessions took place between June and September 1977 in a chicken barn in the rural town of LOWOOD (I’m not joking!).  The group travelled out west from their home base at IPSWICH every weekend to get there.  Engineer RICHARD FAINT would set up two AKAI 4-track reel to reels in the back of a big old truck, and run all the leads into an old barn where the group had hay bales cordoning off the drums and amps facing into walls of pumpkins!  Sometimes nuts and seeds would fall from an overhanging tree and roll down a corrugated roof ruining a vocal take, and the group would be forced to perform again—really difficult circumstances.  In addition, some overdubbing did occur in a group member’s IPSWICH residence.  RICHARD FAINT’s American girlfriend JENNY STOOPS was a graveyard shift announcer on Brisbane Alternative Radio Station 4ZZZ at the time.  So for a few weekends the group would sneak in with her and use the console at the St Lucia (Qld Uni) campus to mix the recordings!

BAD HABIT disbanded shortly after the LP was issued.  There were ONLY 300 COPIES of the album pressed through EMI Custom, with group members being responsible for sale and distribution.  NEIL COOMBE later appeared as a member of 42nd STREET, MR MEANER, FEAR OF FALLING and THE WISHING CHAIR, and remains active in the recording industry today.

Musically the album ranges from OUT-AND-OUT PUNK SNARLERS “Burning Yearning”, “Don’t Touch”, “Leave It Up To Rock & Roll” through to more introspective moments “Shine On”, “Skies”, “I Know Who I Am Now”.  But just when you are about to relax, along comes a HEAVY ROCK passage that threatens to blow guitar shards out of your speakers.  The title track “Stormchild” is an angst-ridden tune that begins with quietly spoken vocals about a child in distress.  Then the punk music kicks in and takes us to a completely different place.  The ETHEREAL PSYCH AND DUAL LEAD GUITAR SOUND on “Lonely Song” would not sound out of place on an early 1970s progressive rock private pressing.  In my opinion, the low fidelity production actually enhances the listening experience!"

Some of the following info is taken from the back cover:

CONDITION - COVER:  ( EX- )...the front is beautifully laminated, with some insignificant bubbling from the manufacturing process; back cover has a matte finish, and the beginnings of ringwear, plus a couple of small creases near the spine...

CONDITION - RECORD:  ( EX )...labels have just a couple of spindle marks only, and it looks to have barely been played...I've played both sides just now and it plays beautifully...has a few crackles at the very end of Track 1...

CONDITION - LABELS:   (Side One: M- / Side Two: M- )...

PACKAGING AND MAILING:  Absolutely ALL care will be taken when packaging this - record and sleeve will be separated to avoid any damage in transit, and both will be packed in a sealed outer light plastic sleeve between layers of strong very flat and thick card - I've been doing this for a while and have attained a good safe packing standard.

If you have any concerns about the accuracy of my gradings, please check my feedback for the odd nice comment from some satisfied folk out there.... (and hopefully you may be able to join their ranks).
