Merrion - See all my reviews This review is from: Johann Sebastian Bach: Six Sonatas for Violin and Harpsichord (Vinyl) For years, despite my love for classical music, I found it hard for some reason to get into Bach. Maybe it was just the Baroque era's general reputation for extravagance, bombast, and superfluous complication, but something made me steer clear. Until, that is, I discovered these recordings of Bach by Aston Magna. I had the good fortune to stumble on a box set that contained the sonatas as well as the Brandenburg Conerti and Partitas for Solo harpsichord for $5 at my local record store, but it would have been worth it to pay $100 for these records. Made in 1978 using assiduous recreations of Baroque instruments, temperment, and style, these recordings burst forth from the speakers - you truly have to hear it to believe it. The Sonatas for Violin an Harpsichord are actually my favorite in the box set - the combination of the lyrical, singing quality of the Violin with the dense interweaved textures and counterpoint of the harpsichord are just perfect. All in all, one of the best purchases I've made for my record collection: remarkable sound (especially considering the age) as well as the excitement of knowing this is (or at least was in 1978) the most accurate recreation of what Bach himself would have heard make this a "Desert Island" recording. Also, each of the records in this series (Smithsonian Institute + Aston Magna) comes with gorgeous booklets with info on the pieces, instruments, and scholarly recreations of the period instrumentation. Unbeatable - unless you can find the whole box set with the Sonatas, Brandenburgs, and Partitas. The SEALED set has one corner split.
