Babs Gonzales was jazz vocalist, poet, and author. Once a key member of the bebop generation alongside artists like Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie, Gonzales eventually became a forgotten figure, and toiling in obscurity. His larger-than-life personality, however, won him many friends and fans in the international jazz underground. A self-reliant, D.I.Y. spirit led to Gonzales self-publishing much of his work. High-speed jazz, heartbreaking ballads, and honest, humorous street poetry was expounded through an inventive vocabulary which saw him dubbed "inventor of the bebop language".

Babs Gonzales was the ultimate hipster! He made the music, he lived the life and he wrote the book! Actually, he did write the "dictionary of jive talk"! He was an integral player in the be-bop movement of the late forties! He and Tadd Dameron formed the first jazz vocalese group three bips and a bop! He wrote "Oop-Pop-Pa-Da" which was a hit recording for Dizzy Gillespie! He was a songwriter, vocalist, producer, hustler and raconteur who was involved with most of the bop jazz giants! He totally lived the hipster life-style and even recorded some albums of jive-talking hipster tales of his famous friends and some of their not-so-famous goofs! He was a very down cat, the most expubident cat of them all, the toast of New York, Hollywood, and Europe. yet, he left a small and obscure recorded legacy. this very rare long-player was issued on Babs Gonzales private record label Hope records! this was a be-bop session with babs singing hot and cool with a select group of cats blowing hard behind him! bop jazz giants working with Babs here include Johnny Griffin [who Babs worked closely with for many years!], Charlie Rouse, Melba Liston, Horace Parlan and Roy Haynes! For lovers of bop jazz, this is a great Babs Gonzales blowing session with plenty of cool wailing!

·                               CONDITION:

·                               THE RECORD

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS STRONG VG++. A few light abrasions  ARE VISIBLE, but they appear fairly  insignificant relative to the overall condition of the vinyl, and are only moderately visually distracting. For most part, the vinyl looks impeccable, without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new (NOTE: a minor pressing 'bubble' on one track ("A Nite in Tunisia") may cause a few clicks and pops)

(b)          The record has a "deep groove" (an indent in the label about 1/2-inch from the edge of the label, which on SOME labels is associated with very early or first pressings).

(c)           The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(d)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·                               THE COVER

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        Back cover has a few yellowish dust speckles scattered here and there, covering about 15% of the back panel

-        Cover has some tiny, faint writing on its back side (a microscopic price code written in one corner)

-        Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 4

-        Back cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record),  probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.

-        Cover shows some light yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging (nothing significant)

-        Cover has one corner slightly dinged (nothing significant)

-        Cover has a partially split spine (less than 1 inch / 2.5 centimeters)

-        Minor shelf wear noted on the seams (nothing significant)

NO OTHER VISIBLE FLAWS OR IMPERFECTIONS ON THE  COVER
