This is the one that started it all, the original late 1960s numbered limited edition box set containing the first 6 releases in DGG's legendary Avant Garde series featuring the cream of the crop of innovative 20th century postwar composers. This copy is in impossible-to-find still-sealed condition, and has the very low number of #11 (out of what I believe was an original edition of 1000), meaning the winner will be getting perfect unopened copies of the very earliest and best-sounding pressings of these historic experimental music recordings! The box contains the following albums, with masterpieces of atonal orchestral, chamber noise, early electronic music, avant vocal, conceptual music theater/performance art, spatial music, and post-Webern serialism:

104 988 - Krzysztof Penderecki: Quartetto per Archi (1960) / Witold Lutoslawski: String Quartet (1964) / Toshiro Mayuzumi: Prelude for String Quartet (1964). Performed by the LaSalle Quartet.

104 989 - Karlheinz Stockhausen: Gruppen (1957 for 3 orchestras); Carre (1959 for 4 orchestras and 4 choirs). Gruppen is performed by the Cologne Radio Symphony Orchestra conducted by Stockhausen, Bruno Maderna, and Michael Gielen; Carre was scored in collaboration with Cornelius Cardew and is performed by the chorus and symphony orchestra of the NDR and conducted by Mauricio Kagel, Andrzej Markowski, Stockhausen, and Gielen. Both are spatial music pieces.

104 990 - Mauricio Kagel: Phantasie fur Orgel mit Obbligati (1967 for organ with musique concrete tape) / Gyorgy Ligeti: Volumina (1961 for organ); Etude Nr.1 Harmonies (1967 for organ) / Juan Allende-Blin: Sonorites (1962 for organ). Organ noise pieces performed by Gerd Zacher.

104 991 - Moderne Chormusik-- Gyorgy Ligeti: Lux Aeterna (1966) / David Bedford: Two Poems for Chorus (1966 on 2 poems by Kenneth Patchen) / Arne Mellnas: Succsim (1964) / Marek Kopelent: Matka (1964). With the Chorus of the North-German Radio, Hamburg, under Helmut Franz.

104 992 - Vinko Globokar: Discours II (1968 for 5 trombones) / Luciano Berio: Sequenza V (for trombone solo) / Karlheinz Stockhausen: Solo (1966 for instrument with tape feedback system) / Carlos Roque Alsina: Consecuenza Op.17 (1966 for solo trombone). With Globokar performing 4 fantastic experimental trombone works.

104 993 - Mauricio Kagel: Musik fur Renaissance-Instrumente (1966); Match fur 3 Spieler (1964 for 2 cellos and percussion). Featuring percussionist Christoph Caskel, cellists Siegfried Palm and Klaus Storck, Collegium instrumentale, and Kagel as conductor.

German composer Karlheinz Stockhausen was a student of Olivier Messiaen and a contemporary of John Cage and Iannis Xenakis, and worked with Pierre Boulez, Luciano Berio, Karel Goeyvaerts, and Mauricio Kagel; he pioneered electronic music at the INA-GRM musique concrete studios of Pierre Schaeffer, Pierre Henry, Luc Ferrari, Francois Bayle, and Bernard Parmegiani, at NHK Tokyo where Yori-Aki Matsudaira, Minao Shibata, Toshiro Mayuzumi, and Jon Appleton also composed, and at WDR Koln along with Herbert Eimert, Henri Pousseur, Gottfried Michael Koenig, Gyorgi Ligeti, Franco Evangelisti, Konrad Boehmer, Anestis Logothetis, and Herbert Brun, and he explored improvisation and live electronics with David Tudor, Vinko Globokar, and Michel Portal. Kagel is a composer of experimental music and music-theater, conductor, and filmmaker who studied literature under Jorge Luis Borges; he was influenced by Stockhausen, John Cage, Erik Satie, and Harry Partch, he worked on early electronic music at the WDR Koln studios, and he lectured at the famous Darmstadt courses where he mingled with Luigi Nono, Earle Brown, Pierre Boulez, and Olivier Messiaen. Globokar is a French-Yugoslavian avant garde trombonist, composer, and conductor who studied under Andre Hodeir, Rene Leibowitz, Luciano Berio, and Andre Lafosse, worked with Derek Bailey, Evan Parker, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Henri Pousseur, Mauricio Kagel, Toru Takemitsu, and Louis Andriessen, associated with Salvatore Sciarrino and Helmut Lachenmann, served as a department head at IRCAM under Pierre Boulez, and formed the New Phonic Art improv group with Michel Portal, Carlos Roque Alsina, and Jean-Pierre Drouet.
