Automine– Padington Band 7”

Featuring Brian and Dave from Animal Collective, Automine was a very local band of teenagers from Baltimore County. This 7” single issued in 1995 captures the earliest available recordings of these musicians.

Purpose – Why am I selling?

Initially I thought I should auction this off simply because I felt I no longer needed to own this record, and there were Animal Collective fans who would appreciate having this in their collection more than I did. Seeing what it sold for in the past was also motivating, of course.

However, I’ve been reflecting on this opportunity and I’ve decided that 100% of the purchase price will be donated to the Holistic Life Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit based in Baltimore. HLF teaches yoga and mindfulness meditation to Baltimore City school students as well as students in several other cities. They’ve made a huge difference in the lives of the underserved and given the connection between Automine/Animal Collective and Baltimore, this felt like a natural choice to give back to the city I will always love and think of as home.

Provenance – How did I acquire this?

I the seller am from the Baltimore area and was acquainted with the members of Automine through mutual friends. As a rather proud booster of Baltimore’s greatness, starting circa 1994 I began accumulating recordings of local musicians. During one of my frequent visits to the venerable Sound Garden record store in Fell’s Point I purchased a new copy of this 7” shortly after it was released in 1995. I do not know how many copies of this were made, but it is certainly a very limited pressing. I’ll guess 100 as a round number, but that is only a guess.

Condition

Vinyl condition is like new, near mint. I’ve announced this auction on Reddit (look in the Animal Collective subreddit). There you can find recordings of this exact piece of media in WAV, FLAC, and 320kb MP3. Ebay doesn’t permit external links to audio files in descriptions, but I can talk about how I made the recordings:

Played on a Technics SL-QD2, routed through a Phono Box S2 pre-amp, and captured by a Creative Labs Sound Blaster PLAY! 3 USB DAC. Recorded in 2-channel stereo, 16bit, 44.1 kHz with flat EQ. There is minimal surface noise but if you are a pro at cleaning vinyl and have better gear than me you might make it even quieter. I chose not to remove incidental pops from the recordings or alter them in any way so that you can hear the most accurate reproduction possible of what you are bidding on.

Sleeve condition is like new, near mint other than a light crease as shown in the pictures. Labels and insert are near mint as well.

This 7” has been lovingly cared for since I purchased it. I’ve consistently stored it upright in a climate-controlled residence, and never jammed it into a too-tight bunch of neighbor records. You can see from the pictures that this record is straight as an arrow (no warping), has no scratches, and all materials are free from stains, tears, and other defects.

Shipping

This will be shipped via UPS Ground and double-boxed with the inner box void filled with cardboard and the outer box void filled with heavy duty bubble wrap (see pictures). Signature required. Buyer pays for shipping. The outer box measures 20” x 14” x 9” so please do not expect it to fit into or through any space smaller than that upon delivery.
